In sum, phenomenal states (qualia) have various contextual operations that give the readers of stories or participants in stories special meaning and purpose. You'll notice that the temporal and ethereal states are designated as "intangibles"; I've done this mainly to show that time and attention are fleeting in a media environment that is constantly outpaced by technological and cultural acceleration.

Hence the reason why stories are so important: They literally transcend the channels and the forms through which they are distributed

Stories are "all-consciousness" explained.

Ultimately, I believe that stories and experience design actually go beyond consciousness and into the realm of "all-consciousness"; the idea that stories and their respective experiences give us a contextually rich palette with which to explore our roles in society, but also to inform, reflexively, the values associated with those roles as we evolve as individuals and socially connected networks.

Just imagine the impact that this can and will have on domains like big data, or product development, or governmental policy formation, or even venture investment. Think about this impact on open innovation.

I also believe that this is a linchpin for the collective intelligence movement; namely, that actions sparked by stories and emergent storytelling practices are the real drivers for social change, at a time in our history where operating context and critical thinking are greatly challenged, and are often deemed too complex to make important decisions in a timely manner.

Ahhh -- really good insights and points here in this article by Gunther Sonnenfeld that expands our typical ways of working with stories in business (transactional storytelling), and how we need to shift to transformational storytelling.


Stories provide meaning and purpose, as the above text says. Even when told for transactional purposes. But there is no reason for organizations not to also claim the higher ground.


This is a thoughtful article that touches on a few fundamental truths about storytelling, and calling us to think/act more deeply about the story work we do.


And I like the visual chart that comes along with it also!

In business, storytelling is all the rage. Without a compelling story, we are told, our product, idea, or personal brand, is dead on arrival.

 

I usually don't curate articles whose main message is that business storytelling is important because it's old news.

 

But I really like this article because the author wonders if storytelling is just another biz fad, or if it is a key insight into communications strategy.

 

How he answers his own question is great! Plus he gives us more good information on the why's and wherefore's of stories being so powerful as a business strategy.

"STORY" IS THE NEW "CONTENT." As buzzwords go, story isn’t entirely bad -- for years I’ve pushed clients to be storytellers. I’ve berated the descent of story into a furtive sea of “content,” stripping all emotion from human pursuits.


I love this post and its irreverent attitude. It is quite refreshing in this day and age when 'storytelling', 'branding', and 'content' are such pervasive buzzwords and hyped as the cure-all for everything.


There are great reminders in this article that great business stories are not sanitized, and that there is danger in always crafting a happy ending.  Only sharing your 'success' stories eventually undercuts your believability. We know there have been mistakes, trials, and tribulations along the way and we want to hear about those too.


Why? Because it makes you human. As the author Gary Goldhammer says, storytelling is about people. Brands aren't about Hollywood actors, and "companies are not logos. There are human beings behind them all."


There are more insights here in this quick post -- reading it is almost like hitting the 'reset' button when we forget the fundamentals of storytelling after getting caught up in the hyped-up excitement about story branding, social media, content creation, and technology.
