eBay: Strategic Acquisitions, Going Social and its Open-Source X Factor!

A few years later, eBay top honchos started talking about something they called ‘Social Commerce’. In an online landscape where ‘Social’ was being added to practically every business and entity that existed on the Web, ‘Social Commerce’ seemed like just another inflated buzz phrase. This is until it sort of seemed to make sense.

Max Mancini, who joined the ecommerce site in 2003, was focused on helping realize eBay’s social commerce dream. He described it as “sharing information to create new trust models.” In simple terms, the model that eBay and other auction sites for second hand goods work on is the basic human trust that exists between strangers. Although eBay did start an internet reputation system, it was far from ‘social’, the way we understand social media in today’s world. In fact, the reputation system that helped eBay thrive for many years, by encouraging user-based feedback and evaluation was so wondrous that a Harvard paper was dedicated to the findings and workings of this mechanism.

Police get social to bust crime online

Twitter and Facebook are becoming a frontline for Australian cops, who say social media can save lives.

"To catch a thief, try Facebook. Hardly the stuff of a riveting whodunnit, but hard-pressed cops in today's connected world aren't complaining.

Officers who have long carried handguns are now starting to reach for the humble smartphone.

Garry Merryweather is one commander who not so long ago would have laughed if you told him he could fight crime with Twitter. Now he reckons social media can save lives.

The experienced superintendent is in charge of a local police Facebook page in Australia that is already delivering results."

If iPhone 5 Release Date Postponed, Is Samsung to Blame?

Apple got a ban of Samsung's devices, didn't it? When Apple obtained an injunction of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 or the Galaxy S2, Samsung continued doing business as it had a wide portfolio of mobile devices.

If Samsung gives Apple a dose of its own medicine by banning the iPads and the iPhones, the Apple Store won't have anything to sell other than the iPods and pricey $2,000 MacBooks or Macs.

Fascinating article on suing & counter suing.

Twitter: Reputation Management in Social Networks | @SilkCharm | Laurel Papworth

I'd like to show you how I see Profile, Identity, Reputation and Trust online. The quick and dirty version:
We create a Profile (My Account) on a site, we make friends and add applications and groups and events to define Identity. We interact over time, offering content and comments and ratings which gains us a Reputation. That Reputation is then turned into a Trust factor – we decide how trustworthy a social network member is by the way they fill out their profile, by the connections they make, and by the content they submit, all of which is over time, which is why Social Media is a long term engagement. (me, so no link )

Media Life Magazine - Twitter ad revenue soars 210 percent

Twitter is expected to grow its advertising revenue at a very healthy clip, though it's still just a drop in the bucket compared to social networking market leader Facebook. Twitter will bring in $139.5 million in global ad revenues in 2011, according to a new forecast from eMarketer, up 210 percent from just $45 million in 2010. While extremely healthy growth, that's still just over 3 percent of the $3.8 billion eMarketer expects Facebook to bring in worldwide this year. Twitter is still very much in its ad infancy, and eMarketer says strong growth will continue in the near future. The firm predicts the company will grow global ad revenue 86 percent to $259.9 million in 2012, and then 54 percent to $399.5 million in 2013. This year 96 percent of Twitter's ad revenue will come from the U.S., but as other countries get involved that number will fall to 90 percent next year and 88 percent in 2013. In the study, eMarketer principal analyst Debra Aho Williamson notes that Twitter's Promoted Products ad platform has been successful in the U.S., and that marketers have seen solid engagement rates that are in some cases better than those on Facebook.
