Rajasthani Painting An Incredible Ritual Of Indian Arts In Medieval Period

Rajasthani paintings were auspiciously cherished long back during the medieval era, with the support and monetary assistance of the kings of several self-regulating states of Rajasthan. These have also been referred to as Rajputana paintings, as the land of Rajasthan was widely famous as Rajputana too in medieval time period, that is, somewhat between 16th to 19th century.

There was time when these unique forms of medieval Indian art, comparable to the Mughal form of arts received the maximum patronage during that particular epoch. However, it is quite different from Mughal paintings specifically in its preference of themes, color usage and the interpretation of the human figures in those paintings.

Rajasthani paintings were most commonly created on spiritual and scared theme lines, such as story of Radha and Krishna or episodes from epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata. The human figures all were displayed wearing Hindu attires, more humble and virtuous in nature than the themes that were represented in Mughal paintings. Basically, the themes in Mughal paintings were much more audaciously drawn and lacked spiritual touch in them.

The landscape paintings of Rajasthani form revealed the jagged and grimy features of the desert land of Rajasthan, while Mughal paintings laid more emphasis on the background of multihued and vivid gardens as well as amusing landscape as liked by the Mughal rulers.

Reminiscent of few other Indian contemporary art forms, Rajputana paintings also used quite a few natural pigments, extracted from plant body parts, rocky minerals, even pulverized valuable stones and fine particles of gold and silver.

Moreover, these distinguished and talented artists never used any chemical colors to create their paintings. They either used fine brushes from plant twigs or hairs from tails of squirrels to draw their pictures. These images were typically created on papers and canvas; however marvelous piece of artwork had been created on the walls and ceilings of many renowned and eminent Rajput palaces and forts constructed during that era. And, one of the popular names among various palaces in Rajasthan wherein beautiful depiction of such paintings has been done is City Palace in Udaipur. Interestingly, the most remarkable and striking form of Rajasthani painting were miniature paintings. These forms of paintings were mostly done on silk, wood and paper, while few of them were also created on ivory and marbles.

Not only this, but also many schools of paintings burgeoned during that era, depending on their specific uniqueness and the particular regions where they had been developed. There are fewrenownedschools of Rajasthani paintings, like Mewar and Marwar School of painting, Bundi and Kishangarh paintings. Apart from this, Kangra and Kulu schools of paintings were also involvedin the creation of Rajasthani form of arts, due to their unique nature of paintings.

In fact, these paintings not only explicitly portray the religious beliefs of the people of that period, also give an in-depth insight into the social life of the individuals living during the medieval era. Therefore, they reflect a clear picture of the royalty as well as the common mass of Rajasthan that were present at that era.

Rajasthani painting is venerated as a primeval and very progressive form of painting till date among the Indian art lovers across the globe. You can find reminiscent of these paintings in Indian art gallery online.

The Charm Of Wash • Water Colour Painting • Indian Art Ideas Blog | Online Art Gallery | Scoop.it

A Wash is a painting technique in which a fine layer of colour is spread over a wet or dry surface such as paper or raw canvas with a wet brush evenly enough to ensure no brush strokes. The artist needs to imagine a lot and create the mood, he is trying to portray in the painting along with the identification of the colours which can present the theme of the painting in the best possible manner.

The Wash technique is usually used in conjunction with the water colours wherein the water colours are used in the same way as used in the water colour painting but a special approach is used for fixing the colours. Usually, it is applied in combination with outlines made by a pen or pencil.

The artist may use as many colours as he desires to wash the painting, keeping an eye on the tones and shades of the colours being used. The appearance of the painting should be as if it is behind fog or clouds to give the desired effect in one wash. In case, if a stronger wash effect is desired, the wash process can be repeated.

The beauty of the Indian Art lies in its fine work and when it comes to the effectiveness of the wash paintings, the artist needs to ensure that the figures and images drawn should fade and coalesce with the background of the painting.

The Wash technique initially appeared in the works of renowned Italian artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Sandro Botticelli, which became highly developed within the next century. It is very popular among the topographical painters and it is considered suitable especially for landscape painting which includes natural scenes such as mountains, trees, valleys, river, forests, etc.

The Wash technique is unique in itself. It is such a form of art that expresses and captures the abstract and is often used to depict the scenes that are typically imaginary in nature. For instance, when it comes to the painting of a flower using a wash technique then the major concern is to convey its liveliness and fragrance rather than perfectly matching its colours and petals which reflects the actual charm of the painting.

Tempera An Interesting Media

Tempera An Interesting Media | Online Art Gallery | Scoop.it
Tempera is a permanent and fast drying painting medium consist of dry pigments which are made usable by mixing it with a water-soluble binder medium which is usually a glutinous material such as egg yolk. Paintings done in this medium are referred to as tempera. The tempera paintings are long lasting. Tempera is made in a traditional way by hand-grinding the powder dry pigments to a binding agent like egg, glue, honey, milk, water and a variety of plant gums. It starts with keeping a little amount of powdered pigment on the dish and adding about same amount of binder and mixing. More binder, more transparent will be the paint. There are different techniques of tempera given below: Egg Tempera- It is the most common form of tempera painting. Mostly egg yolk is used in this form. Egg yolk is not used by itself as it dries very quickly and crackles when dry, so a few drops of water, vinegar or wine can be added to get the desired transparency. More egg mixture more will be the transparency. Egg tempera has a pungent smell which is removed by adding liquid myrrh to give the paint a pleasing odor. A balance of greasy and watery content is maintained by adjusting the amount of water and yolk. More water is added to preserve the consistency on contact with air as tempera dries. After preparation the paint cannot be stored. Tempera paint is resistant to water to allow over-painting with more color but it is not water proof. Tempera Grassa- Addition of oil with the egg yolk in same volume produces a water soluble medium with color effects of oil paint, though it cannot be painted thickly. Pigments- In the medieval period some highly toxic pigments were used such as mercury, arsenic, lead, etc. But today the artists use less toxic modern synthetic pigments which have similar color properties to the older pigments. Application- Tempera paint dries swiftly. It is applied in thin transparent layers. Accuracy should be checked while working with traditional techniques that require use of brush-strokes applied in a cross-hatching technique. It gives a smooth matte finish after drying. Ground- On absorbent ground tempera adheres best as it has lower oil content. Initially inflexible Italian gesso ground was used and the substrate is usually rigid as well. Tempera paint requires a rigid or a wallboard panel coated with several thin layers of gesso (a white, smooth, fully absorbent preparation made of burnt gypsum and hide glue). Painting on canvas will cause crackle and pieces of paint to fall off. The rise of oil painting in about 1400 superseded the tempera paintings, but it was periodically rediscovered in the 20th century by artists such as William Blake, the Nazarenes, the Pre-Raphaelites and Joseph Southhall. In India, Ganesh Pyne and Beohar Rammanohar Sinha, did most of their works in tempera style.

Techniques And Tips To Paint Beautiful Watercolor Paintings

Techniques And Tips To Paint Beautiful Watercolor Paintings | Online Art Gallery | Scoop.it
Thinking of making your watercolour painting different? If yes, then we would like to say that you have come across the right place. Watercolor is one of the most economical painting mediums. You can make this more interesting and different by following the mentioned below techniques: First and the foremost thing that you need to do is add some salt to your painting, which will create speckled and star-burst pattern the moment it dries. Sketch with a light pencil and paint on the areas you want to salt. Sprinkle salt on the painting while the paint is still wet. Set paper to dry and when you come back brush the dried salt away. You will be able to see the astonishing effect that it left to the paint underneath. Another idea can be ‘half painting’. Choose a picture and cut it out right down the middle. Stick this half photo on a sheet of paper and paint the other half of the picture. You will see the splendid result. There is another old watercolor painting technique. Draw a picture using a white crayon on a white paper. Once done with this, paint over the top of your crayon painting with bright watercolor and the drawing will appear like a magic to you. Another technique to draw a ‘zebra’ painting which is made up of only black paint on white paper. You can do this by mixing the paint with some water to make all sorts of shades of grey. Lots of paint and little water makes black whilst lots of water creates light grey.

Techniques Of Acrylic Painting

Techniques Of Acrylic Painting | Online Art Gallery | Scoop.it
Alisha Mittal's insight:

As compared to other mediums Acrylic paint is a new medium which is added to the world of painting only since 1950’s. A lot of practice and patience is required to learn acrylic painting. Mostly artist prefer doing landscape painting in the beginning because it is the easiest way of starting this medium. Next level of this medium is usually portrait painting.

Versatility, permanence and ease of use are few benefits of using acrylic painting. It can be applied as thickly as required like in impasto or as thin as required like in watercolor. As compared to oil paint, acrylic does not yellow or get harden with age. Another important benefit of using acrylic is that it dries faster as compared to other mediums.

There are various techniques of doing painting in acrylic.

Watercolor effect- A number of artists use acrylic in liquid state which is similar to watercolor but there is a noticeable difference. In this technique washes can be layered on each other without disturbing the color underneath. Before applying another layer one must wait for the applied layer to dry completely. Once dried the layer becomes insoluble in water which is then becomes difficult to modify which is one of the disadvantage of using acrylic. To avoid this problem you can either dampen the paper before painting or use an additional brush dampened with water.

Pour and drip technique- In this technique very fluid acrylic paint is used. Either you can pour paint directly or dip a brush in it and let it drop down onto the canvas. Some interesting effects can be created with this technique.

Sgraffito technique- It is a scratching technique which involves scratching the surface of wet paint which reveals the layer underneath the paint. Screwdrivers or sharpened end of a paintbrush can be used for this technique.

Using a squeegee- A squeegee can be used to create effects in a painting. Squeeze out paint blobs directly along one edge of your support and then with one fluid motion drag the paint across the surface with your squeegee smearing and mixing the paint as you go.

How Wash Techniques Are Used In Watercolor Paintings

How Wash Techniques Are Used In Watercolor Paintings | Online Art Gallery | Scoop.it
Wash is one of the most important techniques in watercolor painting. It is also known as wetting technique. This technique is generally used in covering the large area of a paper or a canvas. There are different types of watercolor washes- Pale wash, solid wash, gradient, layered, colour mix. For application of wash technique the area of the paper which is to be covered by the water colours is dampened in water, and for this the paper is taped tightly on all the sides. For applying a wash to watercolor paper the artist needs to use a light hand. To paint, a thick paint brush is to be selected which is dipped in the paint, containing large amount of water and a very less amount of paint. Paint is applied by this paint brush on the wet paper or canvas. Before applying on the paper, it should be applied on the scrap piece of paper to ensure the desired colour and uniformity. The first stroke should start from the top of the paper. It is applied from one side of the paper to another with a single stroke. The brush is dipped in the re-inker solution and the second stroke is applied underneath the first. This process of applying water colour is continued until the entire paper is covered. At last the tape is removed. More than one colour can be used in this technique and it is specially used for landscape paintings. When gum Arabic water colour washes are applied to a highly permeable surface such as paper, its effects are long lasting. This technique is a very important technique in East Asian tradition.
