A federal judge today decided that attorneys for three police officers can introduce evidence regarding bullets and a magazine at a civil trial set to start in a week and stemming from a 2010 encounter with Homewood man Jordan Miles. U.S. District Judge David Cercone ruled that the bullets recovered, and an ammunition magazine reportedly seen, in the yard in which the altercation took place are admissible. They were not admitted at the first trial, in 2012, held by the late Chief Judge Gary Lancaster. Mr. Miles, then a viola student at the Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts High School, was approached by plainclothes police on Jan. 12, 2010, on Tioga Street. He ran, and police tackled him into the yard of Monica Wooding. Ms. Wooding later said she saw a magazine, and police found

Kris Maharaj has been in prison for 27 years. Setting his innocence aside for a moment, he is no better off now than when he joined Thomas Knight on Florida's death row. He was 75 years old in January. Recently, the Florida Parole Commission sent him a letter scheduling his "initial parole interview": it will be held, they say, in April 2042. By then, Kris will be 103 years old. Perhaps more accurately, he will be dead.
