How Restorative Justice Changed This Colorado Cop's Views on Prison

How Restorative Justice Changed This Colorado Cop's Views on Prison | SocialAction2015 | Scoop.it

The role of justice, as portrayed by Lady Justice's scales, is to bring back balance, to make things right again. Punishment and the warehousing of human beings in prisons destroys vast amounts of human potential. By contrast, restorative justice meets the needs of everyone involved in the most humane ways possible—those who commit crimes and those who suffer from them.

This is a process that clearly wasn't working and unfairly penalized many non violent offenders. It is interesting looking at the financial aspect though, although Seniors may be expected to house what are the implications of expelling lifetime prisoners. What is the support structure after they are let out of jail?
Shasta Pomeroy's comment, January 26, 2014 7:39 PM
This change in drug sentences is an interesting change. I wonder if this change in perspective is not only because of society’s negative response but also because of the over-crowding problem that has resulted from the long sentences for drug offenders. The over-crowding has not only lead to poor conditions for inmates but also causes citizens to pay more in taxes to support the prisons and their housing of inmates.
Niki Wilson's comment, January 27, 2014 1:01 AM
The fact that the reform of these mandatory minimum sentencing laws is being supported by the Department of Justice is a great place to start. I'm glad this issues are finally being seriously addressed.

Retired admirals, generals call on Obama to close Gitmo -

Wednesday marked the five-year anniversary since President Barack Obama signed an executive order that was supposed to pave the way to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay. But five years later, the camp still has not closed, 77 of the detainees are cleared for transfer out of the prison and human rights advocates decry the indefinite detention and the use of torture. Now a group of 31 retired admirals and generals has written a letter to the president calling on him to make good on his repeated promise to close Gitmo. RT's Liz Wahl reveals the details of that letter.
