The Penalty is a feature length documentary about the modern day death
penalty in America

The Penalty is a 90-minute film that seeks to lift the lid on the human cost of the death penalty. Centred around three executions, the film pulls back the curtain on the people who are touched by capital punishment every day, but who are often far from death row. We follow the tentacles of the death penalty as they wrap their way around lawyers, innocent men, victims' families and the political landscape.

Mumia Abu-Jamal Speaks Out from Prison on Pennsylvania’s New Law Censoring Convicts’ Speech

Mumia Abu-Jamal Speaks Out from Prison on Pennsylvania’s New Law Censoring Convicts’ Speech | SocialAction2014 | Scoop.it
Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett has signed into law a bill that critics say tramples the free speech rights of prisoners. The "Revictimization Relief Act" authorizes the censoring of public addresses of prisoners or former offenders if judges agree that allowing them to speak would cause "mental anguish" to the victim. The measure was introduced after one of the state’s most famous prisoners, journalist and former Black Panther Mumia Abu-Jamal, delivered a pretaped commencement address for graduating students at Vermont’s Goddard College earlier this month. The speech was opposed by the widow of Daniel Faulkner, the police officer who Abu-Jamal was convicted of killing. The American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania has criticized the new measure, calling it "overbroad and vague," and unable to "pass constitutional muster under the First Amendment." Speaking to us from prison, Abu-Jamal says that "by signing that bill into law, [Gov. Corbett] has violated both of his oaths as governor and as an attorney."

All three of the state’s scheduled executions have been stayed until 2015, the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals decided Friday. In an Oct. 13 motion, Attorney General Scott Pruitt asked the court to push the executions of Charles Frederick Warner and Richard Eugene Glossip to January in order to give the state Corrections Department time to implement new execution protocol and secure the necessary drugs and medical staff. The motion also asked for a third execution, that of John Marion Grant, to be postponed until February.

Sarah O'Leary's comment, October 30, 2014 12:09 AM
I think it shocking to most people the volume of people that are bought and sold for the purpose of sex slavery. It is truly sad problem because it is not like other problems like the sale of organs on the black market in America, where that is legal in other countries. The sale and purchase of people to be sex slaves is a problem that exists not as a substitute to a more expensive necessity, it is a market developed by the true scum of the earth. It is also sad how high the rate is of the women and children that are lost within this market because of the extremes taken by the leaders of these smuggling rings. The rate of recovery and justice in these cases is minuscule in comparison to those that are lost forever.
Dana Hoffman's comment, October 30, 2014 12:26 AM
Thank you Sarah for your insight and I couldn't agree with you more. There are many different kinds of trafficking and on all levels.....I wish this was a crime that would be 100% gone and no one would have to suffer ever again.
Katrina Miller's comment, November 4, 2014 2:04 AM
This is heart wrenching. The short documentary demonstrates the dehumanization of women and children, and highlights the great demand that exists for human trafficking. Possibly the most saddening statement made by one of the pimps was when he was referencing a conversation he had with a business partner and had indicated that his "luggage" was on its way. I personally feel that this mentality is only an extension of the use of pornography.
