Labour of Love- campaign for workers in private homes in Ireland

Au pairs and domestic workers launch new Labour of Love campaign in Dublin

(more here at https://usilive.org/i-am-not-a-slave-...)

Au pairs, carers, and domestic workers will today (Friday 6th March) launch Labour of Love, a new campaign focusing on the rights of workers in private homes across Ireland.

The campaign aims to combat the widespread underpayment, exploitation and abuse of workers providing essential care and housekeeping services. Labour of Love will call for recognition of the employment rights of au pairs, including the right to minimum wage, and the introduction of a work permit for the domestic work sector, to recognised increased labour market demand for migrant workers in the provision of care and domestic labour in private homes across Ireland.

Jane Xavier, domestic worker spokesperson and former au pair, said “Contrary to popular belief, au pairs in Ireland are workers, not cultural exchange participants. In law, au pairs have the same rights as any other workers. In practice, however, we are being used for full-time flexible childcare and domestic labour for a fraction of minimum wage. This is unacceptable in 2015. We need to ensure that au pairs know their rights as workers and families know their obligations as employers.”

Aoife Smith of the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland (MRCI) stated, “In recent years we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of exploited au pairs coming to our centre. These young women are working in excess of 40, 50, 60 and even 70 hours weekly for very little pay, and they are afraid to leave even the most exploitative situations because they risk being left homeless.”

Ms Smith continued, “Au pairs are working long hours in family homes across Ireland, providing essential childcare services in a country where crèche fees are among the highest in Europe and where the state is not investing in public childcare systems. Despite the importance of their work, au pairs are being paid a pittance. Their basic employment rights are being completely ignored.”

The campaign is also calling for the introduction of a dedicated employment permit for domestic work, to match increasing demand for care of the elderly, childcare and household services.

"I Thought I Saw Death": John Lewis Remembers Police Attack on Bloody Sunday in Selma 50 Years Ago

http://democracynow.org - Thousands of people are expected to travel to Selma, Alabama, this weekend for the 50th anniversary of "Bloody Sunday," when hundreds of peaceful voting rights activists were attacked by police crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge as they attempted to march to Montgomery on March 7, 1965. Bloody Sunday was the first of three attempted marches from Selma to Montgomery, which was finally completed under federal protection and led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. One of the protesters beaten on Bloody Sunday was Rep. John Lewis of Georgia, then a 25-year-old organizer with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. "I was hit in the head by a state trooper with a nightstick. I had a concussion at the bridge," Lewis said. "My legs went out from under me. I felt like I was going to die. I thought I saw Death. All these many years later, I don't recall how I made it back across that bridge to the church."

The world is, of course, a much simpler place if you view it in black and white. And, where children are concerned, most of us probably do. So, let us give our clear backing to David Cameron’s headline-grabbing initiative to re-designate child abuse as a “national threat”. The aim is laudable: to galvanise the child protection agencies’ approach to this scourge, and to encourage them to co-ordinate it.

Next month, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear arguments in Glossip v. Gross, a case out of Oklahoma that challenges the most widely used lethal injection protocol as being cruel and unusual punishment. The court took up the case in January after a year of three high-profile, problematic executions in three states. The court will likely issue a ruling by June. Our hope is that it will hasten the end of the death penalty in the United States.
