'Obama silent on racial police killings of unarmed black people'

.

A human rights activist says Obama and Holder have abandoned African Americans and other minorities to the endemic of racial shootings by US police. In the background of this another unarmed black teenager shot by police in the US. Plain clothed cops shot 16 year old Kimani Gray in Brooklyn New York for, they claim, "acting suspiciously". The slaying enraged the community into street protests that have so far lasted for three days and where at least two protesters have been arrested. Press TV has interviewed Dr. Randy Short, human rights activist, Washington about this issue

This could have been any one of us, or any one of our children who was falsely arrested, railroaded, and imprisioned. If we let this stand, who will be next?
Demand that the prosecutors stop covering up their frame-up of this innocent child and come clean. Demand that Davontae be freed to come home

Make legislation to STOP disability budgetary reductions in the United Kingdom

Make legislation to STOP disability budgetary reductions in the United Kingdom | SocialAction2015 | Scoop.it
Hello everyone, I'm Joshua Brandwood and I stand with the Online Militant Disabled Movement. We are about giving a voice to disabled people through the usage of social media.
As you may be aware, central government have planned to localise the Independent Living Fund (ILF), which leaves many unsure and sceptical about how they are going to live independently. Mainstream media claim that this won't impact ILF claimants. However, after consulting with many disabled individuals, it has definitely become apparent that the impact is very real and something needs to be done.
Understandably, some disability reforms have been passed by parliament and are set to take place. However, this petition aims to STOP further disability budgetary reductions. We should be focusing on looking after one and other.
Please look to your heart and show compassion by simply showing your support and signing the petition. Lets unite together. Your political views are irrelevant, we are uniting to fight for our human rights. #Voiceoftheignored https://twitter.com/omdm2015

How Germany Treats Juveniles

How Germany Treats Juveniles | SocialAction2015 | Scoop.it
German administrators emphasize therapy for juveniles who have committed serious crimes and eschew the retributive impulse that has defined American justice for decades.

There are horses for the prisoners to ride, and dozens of rabbits, including one that — according to a prisoner who cares for him — has done well in some sort of national rabbit competition.

“This is the place for violence because they are young, they are aggressive, they have no control,” said Jörg Jesse, head of prisons in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

A Just Cause - Fighting Juvenile Injustice | SocialAction2015 | Scoop.it
Sam Thurman, Cliff Stewart, Lisa Stewart and Lamont Banks of the Colorado exoneration firm A Just Cause, discuss what happens when the wheels of justice trample unbridled over the rights of innocent Americans. Although the American system of justice is the most-respected worldwide, it is still a system designed, and operated, by humans, which means it's not perfect. Sam, Cliff, Lisa and Lamont will highlight ongoing struggles against "the system" to free wrongfully imprisoned people, and what happens when justice miscarries against an actually innocent person. A Just Cause is currently campaigning for "FreeTheIRP6," who's been wrongly imprisoned in Florence, CO for a crime they didn't commit. Read full story: www.freetheirp6.org. Michigan Governor Rick Snyder: Clemency for Tracy Cowan #465699

Michigan Governor Rick Snyder: Clemency for Tracy Cowan #465699 | SocialAction2015 | Scoop.it
My friend Tracy Cowan is serving a virtual life sentence for a crime she didn’t commit.
My name is Marie Walsh. In 2008 I was in a similar position to Tracy’s -- accused of a crime I didn't commit and forced into a year long battle to prove my innocence. I’ve since cleared my name and become an advocate for prisoners’ rights, but it was during that year that I met Tracy.  When I heard her story, I was heartbroken.
In  2001, Tracy’s ex-boyfriend asked her to look after his son. She agreed, and even gave her ex a key to her apartment so that he could visit his son from time to time. She never imagined that he would use her apartment to store large amounts of drugs.
Not long afterwards, law enforcement officials raided Tracy’s house, and it was she -- not her ex-boyfriend -- who was charged with drug possession. Tracy was eventually sentenced to 20-40 years in prison for a crime she did not commit. Her ex, on the other hand, would eventually walk free.
I am asking  Governor Rick Snyder and the Michigan Parole Board to commute Tracy Cowan’s sentence. She has already spent 10 years behind bars for someone else’s crime. She shouldn’t spend a minute more.
Tracy isn’t a  thug or hardened criminal. She had no prior record. In fact, before she was locked behind bars she was an known throughout  the community as a role model. She volunteered with several organizations and worked hard to not only improve the lives of her three children, but the community at large. By the age of 40, Tracy had started a family, earned a BA in business, and was excelling in the childcare industry with hopes of starting her own business.  This is not the life of a drug kingpin.
Tracy made a terrible mistake when she gave her ex her key. She knew he was involved in drugs, but she never imagined he would put her or her children’s lives at risk by  bringing  drugs into her home. Unfortunately and unjustly, she was still deemed responsible for the drugs confiscated from her house even though not a single print of hers was found on any of the paraphernalia.
Please join me and ask Gov. Snyder and the Michigan Parole Board to grant Tracy Cowan clemency. She has already served far too long. Your signature could help change the life of an amazing woman, a great friend, and loving mother.

"What to the Slave is 4th of July?": James Earl Jones Reads Frederick Douglass’ Historic Speech | SocialAction2015 | Scoop.it
In a Fourth of July holiday special, we begin with the words of Frederick Douglass. Born into slavery around 1818, Douglass became a key leader of the abolitionist movement. On July 5, 1852, in Rochester, New York, he gave one of his most famous speeches, "The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro." He was addressing the Rochester Ladies Antislavery Society. This is actor James Earl Jones reading the speech during a performance of historian Howard Zinn’s acclaimed book, "Voices of a People’s History of the United States." He was introduced by Zinn.
