After 40 Years in Solitary, Angola 3 Prisoner Albert Woodfox Ordered Freed for 3rd Time in Louisiana

http://www.democracynow.org -

A federal judge has once again ordered the state of Louisiana to release Albert Woodfox, a former Black Panther who has spent more than 40 years in solitary confinement. Woodfox and Herman Wallace, another prisoner of the "Angola 3," were convicted of murdering a guard at Angola Prison. The Angola 3 and their supporters say they were framed for their political activism. On Tuesday, the same federal judge that ordered Woodfox's release in 2008 again ruled Woodfox should be set free on the basis of racial discrimination in his retrial. It was the third time Woodfox's conviction has been overturned, but prosecutors successfully reversed the two previous victories. The state is expected to appeal once again to keep Woodfox behind bars. We're joined by two guests: Robert King, the third member of the Angola 3, who was freed in 2001 after three decades behind bars; and Mwalimu Johnson, a longtime member of the Angola 3 support team.

Something is wrong when thousands of resumes are mailed to employers with identical information and black-sounding names are 50% less likely to get a call back. Something is wrong when black people are charged prices roughly $700 higher than white people when buying cars. Something is wrong when black drivers are twice as likely to get pulled over by the police and black male teens are 21 times more likely to be killed by cops than their white counterparts. Something is wrong when black people are incarcerated at nearly six times the rate of white people.

And something is wrong when we continue to NOT do anything about it!

The Recovery Diaries: Treatment for Substance Abuse Now Favored Over Punishment

The Recovery Diaries: Treatment for Substance Abuse Now Favored Over Punishment | SocialAction2015 | Scoop.it
For drug or alcohol abusers who get cleaned up, success builds on success.

Those who successfully complete treatment programs do better the longer they manage to stay clean, a study cited by the Georgia Council on Substance Abuse found. About 4 million people went into treatment for drug or alcohol addiction in 2013, the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reports.

Two-thirds of those who manage to stay sober for one to three years will make it another year. Of those who make it five years, 86 percent make it another year.

Some of those stories of struggle and success are featured in “The Recovery Diaries,” a new short film produced by the Juvenile Justice Information Exchange.

Congress: Change Sentencing Disproportions & Disparities Among Minority Defendants

Congress: Change Sentencing Disproportions & Disparities Among Minority Defendants | SocialAction2015 | Scoop.it
We need your help to change sentencing disparities among minority defendants.  The collateral consequences of convictions has taken its toll on American society.  No matter how long the sentence, it becomes a life term for all involved.  Help A Just Cause (AJC) bring attention to the disparities in sentencing among minority defendants.  Congress needs to hear the pleas of American citizens and know that we will not accept racial bias in the judicial process.
In the case of the IRP6, which consists of six software business executives of IRP Solutions, Gary Walker, David Banks, Clint Stewart, Kendrick Barnes, Demetrius Harper and Dave Zirpolo;  Kendrick, an African American, was sentenced to seven years imprisonment accused of signing timecards of employees.
In a different case, Elaine Martin (Caucasian business owner of MarCon) only received a seven year sentence after being found guilty of 22 counts of mail fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy and filing false tax returns resulting in $3.1 million loss by her victims (company obtained 33 contracts totaling $14.2 million).
There is a huge sentencing/racial disparity in these two cases. Please help bring awareness and change to this issue in the United States by signing this petition. Too many minorities and their families are suffering from these extensive sentences and in many cases, innocent men and women have been Wrongfully Incarcerated.
Thank you in Advance and We appreciate your support!

For more information about the story of the IRP6 or for copies of the legal filings go to http://www.freetheirp6.org
