Scaffold Like an Ant- A simple scaffolding example

Check out this infographic which focuses on scaffolding for deeper understanding. Mia MacMeekin has provided a nine step process.

1. Ask a question.

2. Present a mystery for students to solve.

3. Ask students to draw what they know.

4. Give students ample time to research the mystery.

5. Ask students to draw the mystery and the solution again.

6. Ask students to share their drawings with other students.

7. Ask students to pull their ideas together in one drawing.

8. Teacher patiently asks what if questions.

9. If students needs more information, send them back to step #4, and start over again until the outcome or objective is reached.

MacMeekin notes that her students were engaged in the drawing/scaffolding phase of this and reached a deeper understanding than other classes had. It is also important to note that the ant is actually an analogy. To learn more click through to the post.

5 Fundamental Assessment Resources From Learnist

5 Fundamental Assessment Resources From Learnist | onderwijs en media | Scoop.it

"Education is all about the numbers these days. My personal preference is just the opposite.

I have this fantasy where I toss grades in the garbage. In this dream, I let everyone redo things and have conferences to discuss improvement."

Beth Dichter's curator insight, October 18, 2013 10:50 PM

As teachers must is expected from us daily and more and more we are asked to do assessments. Many of us think of testing as soon as we hear assessment. This post discusses assessment stating "assessment isn’t always employed correctly. It sometimes gets over, under, or misused. Assessment should work seamlessly into the classroom routine. The traditional test can be intrusive and stressful. True assessment flows into the lessons and gives a constant pulse on student learning."

The author then provides links to five Learnist boards that focus on assessment, specifically:

* Simple Ways to Monitor Student Progress

* Assessment

* Exemplar Rubrics for Assessment

* Socrative Response Systems

* Metryx

The first three boards have seven to ten resources. The last two links are on a board that is called 21st Century Assessment - Digital Documentation and additional resources are also found here.

"Education is all about the numbers these days. My personal preference is just the opposite." This is an interesting line. What makes it necessary to measure only with numbers?

Joshua Farber's comment, August 17, 2013 1:51 PM
Interesting. I often try to test rule-sets like this by running them past an anecdotal example - in this case, "how would student texting during class be managed by this poster's rules?" Which may expose a dilemma of application - because students texting during class can get an educator a black mark in an impromptu learning walk or unnanounced observation, and because it can tempt other students who cannot afford to be so distracted to think that texting would be a good idea for THEM, I'd define it as a "problem" - but cannot think of many students who would agree. The primary issue here, then: who defines what is a "problem for someone else"? If teacher and student cannot agree on that category, I see little use - and some distraction and danger - in such a set.

6 Types of Blended Learning | onderwijs en media | Scoop.it

"Blended Learning is not so much an innovation as it is a natural by-product of the digital domain creeping into physical boundaries. As digital and social media become more and more prevalent in the life of learners, it was only a matter of time before learning became “blended” by necessity.

That said, there’s a bit more to Blended and “Hybrid” Learning than throwing in a little digital learning." Terry Heick
