What Happens When Students Use Technology Better Than Teachers? - TeachThought | Onderwijs | Scoop.it

"You know the content, you understand pedagogy, and you can navigate the minefield of diplomacy when dealing with parents, students, administrators, literacy coaches, and the local news station when they want to see the iPads glow on the students faces.

You know how to manage and coddle, inspire and organize, assess and deliver content.

But the technology is different. That part you do okay with, but, truth be told, the students are geniuses with technology. Born hackers. And of course they are, you tell yourself.

They’re digital natives."

We treat social constructivism as if it is new. Dewey and Montessori wrote about it over a century ago although they did not call it constructivism. The idea of using digital technologies and social media add a new twist to old ideas and it is important to inquire into what that means.

This may sound like a lofty title, but it’s not wrong. There’s an impressive presentation making the rounds dubbed “Mobile is eating the World” by Benedict Evans. In the presentation, Evans shows some staggering charts, interesting factoids, and all the other statistics you’d expect with a title so grand. It makes me think about mobile learning, mobile browsing, and mobile everything.

But the real story here is about education. It’s about how we’re all going to be learning in the next few years and generations according to the data in the new presentation.

Mobile learning is not only on the rise, it’s inevitable...

Studies show we are not reading as effectively online as we are with hard copies. This highlights the need for tools to help us read deeper online - e.g annotation type tools. Love the idea of flipped learning - so much potential.

Alfredo Corell's curator insight, January 20, 2014 12:25 PM

The Flipped Classroom approach is been widely implemented in schools and colleges around the world. It is even considered as one of the greatest achievements of 21st century education.

The concept behind it is to reverse the traditional classroom practices with the aid of technology. Students access the already prepared lecture materials at home, in advance of the class and in the class they engage in structured class activities to work through problems with their teachers’ help, further their knowledge and learn through collaboration with fellow students. For the Flipped model to be successful, teachers before its implementation need to assess whether it is appropriate for their curriculum and students. They need to see if their students will be receptive to the new learning environment and upon implementation and use, teachers should employ effective practices to keep the model functioning successfully.

Sharla Shults's curator insight, January 28, 2014 9:20 PM

Flipped classroom is a classroom in which students view the lecture components of the class at home, then work with the teacher in class on projects and what previously would have been called homework.

What a flipped classroom model does?
• Students watch lectures at home at their own pace, communicating with peers and teaching via online discussions.
• Concept engagement takes place in the classroom with the help of the instructor.
