Classmates.com joins Facebook, reminds the rest of us why we did - Puget Sound Business Journal | On education | Scoop.it

Give credit to Seattle-based Classmates.com for being smart enough to launch its own Facebook app -- setting aside its pride and embracing a site that, for many people, has replaced Classmates as a means of reconnecting with old friends from high school and college. But in my experience, at least, the initial version of the app highlights the reasons many people switched to Facebook in the first place.

We've written in the past about the efforts of Amazon.com to bring its Kindle electronic reading device to universities, including The University of Washington and Jeff Bezos' alma mater of Princeton University. But Amazon may have a new formidable competitor when it comes to students accessing textbooks and other information on slim computing devices.

Commonwealth of Learning - Knowledge Series: Marketing and Branding of Open and Distance Learning

Commonwealth of Learning - Knowledge Series: Marketing and Branding of Open and Distance Learning | On education | Scoop.it

Open and distance learning (ODL) has evolved over the last century, but the ways in which its benefits are marketed to students and other stakeholders have remained relatively unchanged. The benefits are still relevant but they are no longer sufficient as marketing strategies in the context of education systems in the 21st century. Educational institutions need to incorporate the benefits of ODL into a more comprehensive marketing strategy based on the relationships they develop with their students and stakeholders.

Subtitle, Caption and Translate Any Video with Amara / Universal Subtitles

Robin Good: Amara / Universal Subtitles is a free web-based service that allows anyone to easily sub-title and add captions to any video.

As long as you have a URL of a published video, Amara makes it very easy to caption it. The clip may be on a video sharing site or embedded in custom video player and Amara can still get to it.

Amara is made up of three main parts:

a) A subtitle creation and viewing tool (aka the widget)

b) A collaborative subtitling website

c) An open protocol for subtitle search/delivery

All tools inside Amara are free and open-source.

Supported video players and video sharing sites include:

Flowplayer JW Player Firefox native player Chrome native player
  YouTube Vimeo Dailymotion blip.tv

See examples: http://www.universalsubtitles.org/en/videos/watch/ ;

Essay on how to defend the humanities | Inside Higher Ed | On education | Scoop.it

Long gone are the days when academic humanists could sit like dragons astride their hoards of high culture. Today, we have become contrarians, for better or worse, battling adversity from without and uncertainty within. And yet, what we have to offer is needed now more than ever.

e4innovation.com » Blog Archive » 7 principles of learning design

e4innovation.com » Blog Archive » 7 principles of learning design | On education | Scoop.it

In this blog post I want to describe seven principles of learning design. I would welcome comments. Are there any others I have missed for example?

The first is that teachers are bewildered by the plethora of tools available and lack the skills necessary to make informed learning design decisions. Therefore a key facet of all the tools is that they attempt to provide practitioners with some form of guidance and support around their design practice. The aim is to help them shift from an implicit, belief-based approach to design to one that is more explicit and design-based (Conole 2009). Evidence of the evaluation of the use of these tools shows that they do help shift practitioners from a focus on content to activities and the learner experience.

iLearn Technology | BoomWriter: Collaborative story writing

iLearn Technology | BoomWriter: Collaborative story writing | On education | Scoop.it

by Kelly Tenkely

"I just learned about this fantastic site from fellow edublogger @dkapuler, thanks David! Boom Writer is a fun site that gives you a new way to engage your students in creative writing, and will have them assessing themselves in a new way. Using Boom Writer, you (the teacher) choose or produce your own story starter. Each student follows this prompt letting their imagination take over. One chapter at a time, student write, read and vote on the submissions they like the most. The winning chapter gets added to the story and the process continues. You can determine how many chapters will be completed. When the collaborative story is finished, the book can be read online or published and turned into a published print copy."

Today the UNESCO "Paris Declaration on OER" has been approved!

Emphasizing that the term Open Educational Resources (OER) was coined at UNESCO’s 2002 Forum on Open Courseware and designates “teaching, learning and research materials in any medium, digital or otherwise, that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits no-cost access, use, adaptation and redistribution by others with no or limited restrictions. Open licensing is built within the existing framework of intellectual property rights as defined by relevant international conventions and respects the authorship of the work”.
