What is professional development?  It is pretty much anything that helps one develop professionally. At the heart, professional development is about growth and learning.  In the field of education, it seems like many quickly think of educational opportunities that mimic what they see in their schools. As a result, they turn professional learning and education into schooling.  The problem with that is that schooling is too limiting.  In this age, there are many other exciting and high-impact learning opportunities for teachers that extend beyond traditional notions of schooling.  When we hear the phrase “professional development,” certain practices likely come to mind, things like in-services and conferences. In the digital age, there are countless other opportunities for professional development and restricting one’s thoughts to just a few options limits our insight into what is possible for our students.  With that in mind, here is a brainstorm of 20 options available to educators today. This is far from an exhaustive list, but it is enough to start exploring the possibilities.  Feel free to suggest others in a comment to this post.

One of the most difficult parts of our jobs as educators is to create a learning environment where our learners are engaged and meet content and curriculum goals. From my experience, the single most important challenge that needs to be addressed to earn engagement in our classrooms is to develop a culture of learner autonomy--allowing and encouraging learners to take control of their own learning. There are many barriers that we, as educators, must work to clear in order to create a strong culture that allows our learners to feel comfortable with working toward a common goal in the way that works best for them.

Here is a glimpse of his journey: "As teachers, it is difficult to let go of control and to let our learners find the best ways for them to achieve content and curriculum goals. To be clear, our role in the classroom needs to change, and I think the trend in education is moving the correct direction--achieving and creating a learner-driven, personalized atmosphere is the key. Providing learners with the tools to succeed should be the goal, and we should focus on allowing them to use those tools in the way that works best individually. Instead of providing the blueprint for learners to achieve a goal, educators should be allowing and guiding them in designing, developing, and implementing their plan for accomplishing it. When this happens, drastic changes take place regarding engagement in our classrooms and ownership of learning appears, leading to a higher level of achievement."

Across Australia some of these ideas are being put into practice. Some schools have dropped the notion of year levels to enable them to meet children at their point of need and acknowledge that not all students learn at the same pace.

Computer programs are enabling instruction tailored to the student by assessing where they are at and providing a tailored curriculum.

Capabilities , such as personal and social capability and critical and creative thinking, are being embedded in the curriculum. Work is under way to develop assessment measures. Teachers across Australia are working on developing new models of practice to support this approach.

We need to accelerate the change. We are wasting too much of students’ learning time and are failing to amplify their talents. To continue along the current path is increasingly unscientific, unjustifiable and plain dull.

Evolving from the days of the printing press, mass dissemination of information was, until the mid 20th Century primarily achieved using text. Whereas video, sound and movies, and images emerged as powerful social messages, within the classroom context the almost-singular focus on text as a means to communicate continued. And the means to create and disseminate these messages were retained in the hands of the knowledgeable creators.
With the advent of the web and its own evolution, we are no longer reliant on print media. We only have to consider the ongoing demise of print media companies, newspapers, journals and magazines to understand the overwhelming social movement to multimodal communication on the web. And at the spearhead of the movement is the capacity of the ordinary citizen to create the same resources as have always been created by the experts.
If we do not embrace this movement in formal education we are at risk of widening the divide between the visual learning that is more common in informal education, and what occurs in the classroom.
But beyond this even is the power of visual thinking, the use of graphic organisers to support and transform thinking. This resource demonstrates some of he common, and some of the less common.

In thinking about this exchange, I think I’m coming to realize that what my students valued about the conversation may not have been the subject matter necessarily, but rather that I was willing to stop the lesson for a few minutes just to have a talk about why I found it interesting. When interacting with other students, I try to do the same thing: allow the conversation to proceed naturally from a genuine question, and not worrying about a specific academic goal for every interaction. I’ve had some of my deepest, most interesting, most academically rigorous conversations with students based on this questioning method — they aren’t used to teachers allowing themselves to get sidetracked from the lesson at hand, but once they realize that they aren’t being played in some way, they engage at an almost miraculous level.

If you've never heard me talk about Evernote, we probably haven't talked much. Evernote is my all time favorite tool for every aspect of my life. I use it for my personal life, this blog, my job, my freelance clients and everything in between. The problem with Evernote is that it can do SO much, it's very easy to get overwhelmed when starting out. My goal is to help you understand Evernote so that you'll use it and love it.

I've been using Evernote for close to 3 years now. It's one of the few programs I always have open on my computer. It's also the app I use most on my phone. I used to be a huge fan of notebooks (I still am), Evernote just lets me save those notes, search them and tag them. If you're a student, business owner, blogger, mom or planning any kind of event, Evernote will be useful to you.

Black+Decker, the company known for its power drills and other tools, has just announced a new smart product: the Smartech Battery. This Bluetooth-connected battery will work with all current Black+Decker 20V MAX tools, and the company says it is available now for $70 (converted, that's about £50 or AU$95; international availability wasn't announced).

Smartech Batteries will work with the Black+Decker iOS and Android app, meaning people can control the batteries and, therefore, their tools, wirelessly. First, you can enable and disable any of these batteries while in range. That means no one can use any battery-powered tools lying around the garage during a project unless you enable the batteries via the app. You can also use the app to view battery life, use a "locate" feature to find missing batteries and activate each battery's USB port. The app has other components like a message center for notifications from batteries and a "Projects" section that is supposed to offer insight into construction and ideas for DIYers.
