ASCD Express 11.20 - A Road Map for Creative Instruction

ASCD Express 11.20 - A Road Map for Creative Instruction | On education | Scoop.it
Students who learn in a creative environment, are exposed to creative activities and assignments, and observe their teacher modeling creative thinking will become more creative thinkers (Sternberg & Williams, 1996). A creative learning environment that embraces students and engagement along with critical thinking and creative thinking skills is essential to student achievement (Boykin & Noguera, 2011, 2012; Marks, 2000, as cited in Jensen, 2013). To plan the instruction that matches your creativity nurturing classroom enviornment, first identify the nonnegotiables. The nonnegotiables consist of the curricular standards, the required content, and the skills that are the target of a lesson (Drapeau, 2004). Then, choose one of four roads on the Creativity Road Map or combine roads to intentionally integrate creative instruction with content.

Learning From (Reflection On) Experience - InformED

Learning From (Reflection On) Experience - InformED | On education | Scoop.it
“Within the world we find two dimensions, reflection and action, in such radical interaction that if one is sacrificed—even in part—the other immediately suffers.” –Paolo Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed

Skilled learners are aware not only of what they’re learning but how they’re learning (or not learning) it. They stop a moment during their studies to consider how much they’re retaining, assess their methods, shift gears, and test their own understanding of new material. As we’ll see, doing so is crucial to any successful education. The good news is, making a habit of it is far less complicated than it sounds.

“When students are aware of themselves as learners, anything is possible,” says Starr Sackstein, a high school English teacher in New York and the author of Teaching Mythology Exposed: Helping Teachers Create Visionary Classroom Perspective. “Think about how much easier it would be to help students get their needs met if they knew exactly what to ask for help with. It has been my experience that teaching these skills to students enhances their learning experience exponentially.”

She adds: “Every kid is getting what he or she needs and the one size fits all approach isn’t the norm. I think kids are more independent learners now too because they realize they don’t need me for everything. I’m here to support, but not as the only one who knows how. It’s great to see kids trusting themselves more.”

Joshua Block, a humanities teacher at the Science Leadership Academy in Philadelphia, agrees. “The end of a [course] period may often feel like a time to slow down and regroup before another set of students arrives. An alternate view is that these last moments, which usually occur when ideas have had a chance to marinate, can be a time when quiet thinkers finally articulate their ideas.”

The purpose of learning is about learners being prepared for their future and reaching their fullest potential as lifelong learners. This means that they have a voice with the confidence to express their ideas and opinions so they are heard and taken into account in any situation.

Four Tools to Merge the Digital and Physical in Your Maker Classroom (EdSurge News)

Four Tools to Merge the Digital and Physical in Your Maker Classroom (EdSurge News) | On education | Scoop.it
It’s a new world: the digital and tangible are merging, and educators need to help students navigate the changing terrain. The solution? Let them be Makers.

I’ve been involved in digital learning and education technology for more than 30 years, and the burgeoning attempt to merge the digital and physical worlds has been one of the most interesting aspects of the evolution of EdTech to date. Managing that change in a Making context that encompasses digital tools, hands-on construction, creation and interaction allows students to learn and create new knowledge experientially. It gives them the ability to conceptualize new ideas and invent solutions for unexpected problems.

Mark Zuckerberg Covers His Laptop Camera. You Should Consider It, Too.

Mark Zuckerberg Covers His Laptop Camera. You Should Consider It, Too. | On education | Scoop.it
Mark Zuckerberg is one of the most powerful men in the world because billions of people give Facebook, which he founded, free access to their personal data. In return, users receive carefully curated snapshots of his life: baby photos, mundane office tours and the occasional 5K.

On Tuesday, observers were reminded that Mr. Zuckerberg, 32, is not just a normal guy who enjoys running and quiet dinners with friends. In a photo posted to his Facebook account, he celebrated the growing user base of Instagram, which is owned by Facebook. An eagle-eyed Twitter user named Chris Olson noticed that in the image’s background, his laptop camera and microphone jack appeared to be covered with tape.

Other publications, including Gizmodo, used the tweet to raise the question: Was this paranoia, or just good practice?

It’s hard to believe that just six years ago Minecraft was virtually unheard of. It was little more than a hobby project for creator and designer Markus Persson. Fast forward to 2016 and Minecraft has completely changed the way we perceive videogames.

Starting as a novelty in a handful of innovative classrooms, Minecraft is now a foundation of curriculums around the world. From math to art to geography and even quantum mechanics, Minecraft and imaginative educators are turning bland subjects into incredible immersive learning experiences.

Top 10 Movies for Teaching Media Literacy: Part 1 - The LAMP

Top 10 Movies for Teaching Media Literacy: Part 1 - The LAMP | On education | Scoop.it
As a media literacy educator, and someone who learned most of what I know from cinema, I love movies that pull back the curtain and show us the hidden side of media. Looking to movies to critique the media industry is a paradox, for sure, but it’s fun to revisit movies I love and examine just how much I learned about media from watching movies. The ten movies I selected challenge the way we see our news, television and advertising media, question the way men and women and race are represented, or underrepresented, in media, and the way we, the audience, are influenced and often exploited by media. The ten movies I selected are also entertaining. And I threw in a couple movies that critique the film industry, for good measure.
