50 Things To Do On The iPad

50 Things To Do On The iPad | On education | Scoop.it

While the iPad is not the savior for learning–or even mobile learning for that matter, if you use one for five minutes it’s easy to see that it is an amazing piece of hardware.

We’ve talked about how to use them in a PBL environment. And how to record ideas with them. And even separated ideas for using the iPad in the classroom by complexity. (Or, see ten of our top iPad posts here.)

I have been using savetube.com and keepvid.com (seems to be having 500 Server Error troubles at the moment), but the interface for each is deceptive. Sending a "fawn" into this area would likely end up causing unwanted downloads.

Top 10 EduBlogs All Online Teachers Must Follow

Top 10 EduBlogs All Online Teachers Must Follow | On education | Scoop.it

Here’s a list of blogs that feed my teaching soul, hunger for knowledge, and need for deeper insights into teaching,  learning and writing. There are so many wonderful blogs that it’s impossible to list them all here,  so I’m listing the ones that have been most relevant to my own professional development. As such, they should be relevant to any teacher who wants to turn online teaching and/or publishing into a fully-fledged career.

5 ideas for using Google Hangouts On Air | Innovative Educator

5 ideas for using Google Hangouts On Air | Innovative Educator | On education | Scoop.it

By Lisa Nielsen

"If you're an innovative educator, by now, you have probably tried Google Hangouts which let you conduct a video conference with up to ten people / locations FOR FREE! This by itself has terrific potential for teaching and learning tool.

I explained here ways the following ideas could be put to use in the classroom:1)  Take a class without having to be in the same place. 2)  Invite an audience to a performance. 3)  Invite others to perform/discuss with you. What you may yet to have tried is livestreaming your Hangout and capturing it via YouTube. This is known as Google Hangouts On Air which takes something that was already awesome, and makes it even better.
You can see what it is here:"

Amazon launches Storyteller to turn scripts into storyboards -- automagically

Amazon launches Storyteller to turn scripts into storyboards -- automagically | On education | Scoop.it

Excerpt from review article by VentureBeat:
"Upload your script, choose some backgrounds, and magically created a professional-looking storyboard of your movie. Or the graphic novel version of your text-based anything.

Amazon Studios released Storyteller today to allow writers and filmmakers to quickly, easily — and cheaply — storyboard their scripts.

Roy Price, Amazon’s director of Studios said: “Storyteller provides a digital backlot, acting troupe, prop department, and assistant editor — everything you need to bring your story to life.”

You start by uploading a script to Amazon Studios — or by playing with one that’s already there. Then simply page through the script paragraph by paragraph. Storyteller will try to match up characters, props, and background with the words in each chunk of text, and it does a surprisingly good job.

But if you don’t like what Storyteller gives, you can choose from its library, or even upload your own custom background or characters. Currently, the software has a library of thousands of props, characters, and backgrounds..."

Brainstorm in Progress: MOOCs: Disruption is the Mother of Invention

Brainstorm in Progress: MOOCs: Disruption is the Mother of Invention | On education | Scoop.it

There is an article in the Boston Review by Thomas Leddy called "Are MOOCs Good for Students?" In this article Leddy claims that

"MOOCs pose a great threat to the most important value of higher education: 'literacy.' By 'literacy' I mean, very broadly, the ability to read, think about, and intelligently respond (both orally and in writing) to the literature of any field of study. Thus, implementation of MOOCs for university credit is bad because it is bad for our students."

10 Winners Of iversity's MOOC Contests All From European Universities - WiredAcademic

10 Winners Of iversity's MOOC Contests All From European Universities - WiredAcademic | On education | Scoop.it

iversity’s jury announced the 10 winners of its MOOC Production Fellowship contest. It will launch the courses for students in Germany, Europe and the rest of the world. Our view is that it is interesting – and a little surprising – that all the winners were from Europe. The list of finalists we looked at showed many good proposals from North America and other parts of the world, many with sexier ideas and titles than their European counterparts. So it makes us wonder if the contest was really ever a global one or just appeared to be so? Anyways, it’s great to have MOOC players emerging from Europe, including iversity. But perhaps they should have been more up front that it was an EU competition?

Joanna Wild & Rowan Wilson - CC BY: what does it mean for scholarly articles?

CC BY is not essential for Open Access. However, making a paper Open Access without the CC BY licence, or with a more restrictive type of Creative Commons licence (e.g. CC BY-ND or CC BY-NC), may mean that a reader must still obtain your specific permission to adapt the work and/or use it for commercial purposes.

The different flavours of CC licence enable you to be more restrictive if you want to be, but obviously the Government/RCUK wants its publicly funded research to be as unrestricted as possible.

CC BY just gives a more liberal blanket permission for some actions.

Education 3.0: Altering Round Peg in Round Hole Education

Education 3.0: Altering Round Peg in Round Hole Education | On education | Scoop.it

Jackie Gerstein shares her Ignite talk for ISTE 2013 that was recently rejected by the selection committee. Discover Education 3.0!

Via Kathleen McClaskey
Kathleen McClaskey's curator insight, June 10, 12:16 PM

After reading this blog, Jackie has articulated a new vision for education where she sees that the "best interests of the learner" needs to come first. I could not agree more. She describes Education 3.0 in this way: "Learners as connectors, creators, constructivists."

"Education 3.0 is a constructivist, heutagogical approach to teaching and learning.  The teachers, learners, networks, connections, media, resources, tools create a a unique entity that has the potential to meet individual learners’, educators’, and even societal needs.  Education 3.0 recognizes that each educator’s and student’s journey is unique, personalized, and self-determined.

The bottom line, though, is not is what is in the best interests of the teacher, the administration, the politicians.  It is what is in the best interests of the learner.  The student should be central to education – not the content, not the tests, not the standards, not what we think students should know and do.  Teachers did not become teachers to teach to the test, to develop practice tests or worksheets, to work with pre-scripted curriculum to meet standards.  Teachers became teachers to teach students, first and foremost.  The learner needs to be central to all teaching endeavors."

Thank you Jackie for sharing this perspective with educators, everywhere!
