Alexandra Guité's insight:

"Professor Mitra is a Physicist and teaches Educational Technology at Newcastle University. Some years ago he had a revolutionary idea: “The Hole in the wall”. He installed computers in the streets of the slums of India and observed that children organize by themselves and learn naturally. So have we all a teacher’s soul inside us?''

Everything we do and say is story. All standard story structures ask the question 'who am I?' and try to make the answer interesting - or we stop caring. The rules here contain some great visuals and a lot of thought-provoking ideas. Go be provoked.

The 21st-Century Digital Learner

The 21st-Century Digital Learner | Omnivore Socio-Technologique | Scoop.it
After hosting dozens of these conversations, I realize one thing: We just don't listen enough to our students. The tradition in education has been not to ask the students what they think or want, but rather for adult educators to design the system and curriculum by themselves, using their "superior" knowledge and experience.

Bibliomancienne's curator insight, August 26, 2013 6:17 AM

Four Essential Principles of Blended Learning

Four Essential Principles of Blended Learning | Omnivore Socio-Technologique | Scoop.it

The single biggest piece of advice offered by most blended learning pioneers is to have a cohesive vision for how the technology will enhance specific learning goals, how it will ease the burden on teachers, and how it can make both teachers and students more creative learners.

The key is to engender a love of learning – and enable access to all.

Stephen Dale's curator insight, August 22, 2013 4:05 AM

I'm into the second week of my second MOOC with Coursera, studying Social Psychology (or in other words....understanding people and behaviours). I would advocate this style of learning for anyone who hasn't tried it yet - it's a great way to expand your knowledge into topics that might otherwise be difficult (or expensive) to access. This method of learning is particularly suited to continuos professional development. I'm less convinced that MOOCs would or could replace full or part-time degree courses.

“ In this video, activist Angela Davis and musician Nas talk with Dr. James Peterson as part of Lehigh University's event: “The Incarcerated Justice Series: Civil Rights in the 21st Century." Nas discusses his upbringing in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and the way drugs and police surveillance effected his community and personal development. Davis talks about her work in prison abolition, recollecting her then disbelief that over 200,00 people were in prison in the US when she was imprisoned in the 1970s. Today, the US prison population exceeds 2 million. Davis also cites W.E.B. Du Bois, who suggested that new democratic institutions should be created to incorporate former slaves outside of the prevailing democratic systems. "Of course, that never happened," Davis notes, "we're dealing with the consequences of that today." ”
