Not all of the effects the oil spills have on animals are known. We do know that animals are dying, approximately 7,000 birds, dolphins and sea turtles were found dead after the oil spill. Thousands of animals are dying and getting sick from the oil spills. This website delves into more statistics and facts about the deaths of animals from the oil spills which is important to talk about after writing about the effects the oil spills have on these animals.

Florida still in grip of 2010 BP oil spill | Bradenton Herald Editorials | Bradenton Herald

Florida still in grip of 2010 BP oil spill | Bradenton Herald Editorials | Bradenton Herald | Oil Spills | Scoop.it
A confluence of developments over the past week show once again that Florida remains in the grip of the massive 2010 oil spill in the Gulf after the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig. Including Manatee County.
Alexandra Kauffman's insight:

Even though this oil spill was in 2010, Florida is still struggling with the effects that the oil spill is having on their environment. "With the state of Florida joining a multistate lawsuit against British oil company BP, a new study showing sick fish as far south as Sanibel, and a giant tar mat washing ashore off Pensacola Beach, we're reminded that this catastrophe has not disappeared." There are still negative effects of the oil spill even years after it took place. It harms animal life and it is important to compare different oil spills to each other and see what people are doing about them and to try to stop them from happening.

Alexandra Kauffman's insight:

The five biggest oil companies are paying to receive a tax break and to lobby senators and representatives so that they will weaken the public health safeguards so that they will be able to continue to receive significant amount of tax breaks. It is important to look behind the curtain and see what these companies are doing with their money and to keep themselves in business.

1. TEDTalks: Cesar Harada-A Novel Idea for Cleaning Up Oil Spills

Cesar Harada quit his job after hearing about the BP oil spill that took place in the Gulf of Mexico. He moved to New Orleans so he could develop a way to soak up the oil that spilled and find solution that was not yet formed. He created a boat that cleans large areas where the oil has spilled really quickly.

Gulf's Oil Spill's Effects Still Has Seafood Industry Nervous

Alexandra Kauffman's insight:

It is seen that fish are still being affected by the oil spills. "Sick fish" are still present and picked up in places such as Louisiana. The oil spills had a major impact on fish and the seafood industry. People are now skeptical about the fish they are eating and whether or not it will make them sick by eating it. It is important to talk about the food we still bring in and eat that was present during the oil spill and could have harmful toxins in them.

Alexandra Kauffman's insight:

Fracking is important to talk about with the oil industry and oil spills because it can help produce less harmful chemicals in the air. It is a very controversial topic that I feel is important to discuss in my project. Fracking helps the Earth and the environment in a short-term type of way, not a long term type. It uses hundreds of chemicals to dig through the Earth which is all released into the air. I will delve more into this topic in my project.
