The Fracking Industry's Contempt for the Public Is Finally Coming to Light

The Fracking Industry's Contempt for the Public Is Finally Coming to Light | OHS and its impact on the environment | Scoop.it
Recent disclosures reveal little else but a interest in making profits.
PatrickandAlexis Doyle's insight:

Yet another example of the coal seam gas (CSG) industry and their use of fracking.  The chemicals used during fracking are hazardous to both humans and the environment.  The long term effects of some of these chemicals is not yet known.  One concern of many is how do the CSG companies prevent these chemicals from entering into aquifers and other water sources?

Off the Rails - OHS Canada

Off the Rails - OHS Canada | OHS and its impact on the environment | Scoop.it
Off the Rails
OHS Canada
While the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is still investigating the incident, it has already issued several safety-advisory letters. As early as July 19 ....
PatrickandAlexis Doyle's insight:

A shocking example of the effects of poor OHS practices.  47 people killed, 6 million litres of crude oil spilled.  Most of the crude oil burned during the ensuing fire, spewing a massive toxic cloud into the environment. Crude oil was also found in river systems over 100km from the crash site.  It's difficult to comprehend that this was the result of leaving the train unattended, parked on a hill with insufficient braking.

Knolls radioactive cleanup moves ahead, safety fines still possible - Albany Times Union

Knolls radioactive cleanup moves ahead, safety fines still possible - Albany Times Union | OHS and its impact on the environment | Scoop.it
Knolls radioactive cleanup moves ahead, safety fines still possible Albany Times Union Continued work on a troubled cleanup of 1950s-era radioactive waste at the Knolls Atomic Power Labs research site now appears to be satisfying safety concerns...
PatrickandAlexis Doyle's insight:

There are a lot of arguments both for and against the use of fracking, but this subject is one that we need to pay attention to.  The Coal Seam Gas industry in Queensland utilises fracking and debate has raged, particularly on the Darling Downs, about the the environmental and health effects of this process.  Despite its continued use, I personally feel that we need a greater understanding of how it impacts our environment and the health effects of nearby residents.

Wyden Reveals New Safety Risks From Flawed Nuclear Waste Storage Tanks At Hanford, Calls For Immediate DOE Response | Senator Ron Wyden | OHS and its impact on the environment | Scoop.it
Washington, D.C.Up to six storage tanks holding dangerous radioactive nuclear waste at the Hanford Site in Southeast Wa (My full statement on newly disclosed report on severe safety issues with #Hanford tanks: http://t.co/6AeIi0ZCN3)...
PatrickandAlexis Doyle's insight:

Nuclear advocates are constantly pushing the agenda for this supposedly "clean" energy source.  Until something goes wrong and then you have to clean it all up.  What happens to the Columbia River when these tanks start leaking nuclear waste?

BP Deepwater Horizon Accident Investigation Report

BP has published its internal investigation into the accident on the Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico on 20 April 2010. The investigation found th...
PatrickandAlexis Doyle's insight:

While the main goal of BP's internal investigation was to prevent any similar incident from happening again, they were adamant about not apportioning blame. Despite most large companies having a "no blame" policy, I think it is necessary to point out that the government bodies investigating this incident took on a very different view.  Irrespective of who was at fault, the fact remains that this incident resulted in loss of lives, massive environmental damage and ongoing impact to communities and businesses in the Gulf of Mexico.  Interesting report but was it biased?

30,000-year-old virus is revived

30,000-year-old virus is revived | OHS and its impact on the environment | Scoop.it
An ancient virus has been brought back to life after lying dormant for 30,000 years in the Siberian permafrost, scientists say.
PatrickandAlexis Doyle's insight:

What else is hidden under the permafrost?  As new discoveries are made will they represent a danger or a benefit to modern mankind?  Is the permafrost disappearing due to global warming?  I think this articles raises more questions than it answers.

PatrickandAlexis Doyle's insight:

There is a lot debate both for and against the use of fracking, however this is a topic that we really need to understand better.  The coal seam gas industry in Queensland has been using fracking for a number of years now.  Communities on the Darling Downs have been very vocal with their concerns about the use of this technology.  Despite its ongoing use, I personally feel that we need to develop a greater understanding of how fracking impacts on our environment and the health of those who live near well sites.

How does road salt impact the environment? - Fond du Lac Reporter

How does road salt impact the environment?
Fond du Lac Reporter
Road salt may be the most effective way to melt snow and ice on local roads every winter, but scientists say it comes with a clear environmental downside.
PatrickandAlexis Doyle's insight:

The safety benefit of salt for road users is very clear, however the cumulative effect of salt dissolving into snow and ice, then running off into waterways is now a major concern.  Freshwater lakes, steams etc. are suffering with raised salinity levels, which adversely effects the local ecosystem.  The unfortunate fact is that over the last ten years, the use of road salt has steadily increased.

Article 8.

Road salt has made a reduction in road accidents and road safety is very important, but is there another way we can continue to keep our motorists safe during snow season, without slowly damaging our environment at the same time?

PatrickandAlexis Doyle's insight:

Air New Zealand are renowned the world over for their safety record.  They have also re-invented the inflight safety videos, making them something that their passengers want to watch.  It's great to see that they place the safety of the production team as a priority when filming their latest inflight safety video.  And a very nice environment too!!!!  Just happens to be where we had our honeymoon.  Highly recommend Aitutaki to anyone!!!

All of the articles on this page mean a great deal to me and the world we live in. As I go on my OHS journey over the coming the years I plan to do everything I can to make sure we look after this special place that we have. We need to make positive changes now, so that we, along with the next generations, can enjoy this beautiful planet we all share. Every little bit counts!!!
