Dana O'Brien's insight:

Article 8.

Road salt has made a reduction in road accidents and road safety is very important, but is there another way we can continue to keep our motorists safe during snow season, without slowly damaging our environment at the same time?

PatrickandAlexis Doyle's curator insight, March 3, 2014 6:10 PM

The safety benefit of salt for road users is very clear, however the cumulative effect of salt dissolving into snow and ice, then running off into waterways is now a major concern.  Freshwater lakes, steams etc. are suffering with raised salinity levels, which adversely effects the local ecosystem.  The unfortunate fact is that over the last ten years, the use of road salt has steadily increased.

Not sure if this clip is funny but it does present a very graphic example of a workplace accident. The woman also makes an EXCELLENT point that there is no such thing as workplace accidents. It also touches on the topic that prevention of workplace accidents is the responsibility of the administration of the companies. Companies should be implementing  ways to protect their employees. Lack of strict policies. Quick and powerful video that is direct and straight to the point, PREVENTION IS KEY.

Measuring Stress in the Workplace

Dana O'Brien's insight:

Article 7.

Work-related stress i believe is one of the major contributors to some of the work-related injuries that occur in workplaces.  I deem work-related stress is a major influence on human error. I know in myself that when under stress i do not perform my very best in whatever task i am undertaking. If workplace stress was emphasized and employees and also employers became more aware of it, it would decrease workplace injuries, human error and the workplace environment would become more supporting and encouraging.

The True Cost of Workplace Injuries [Infographic]

"The true cost to the nation, employers, and individuals of work-related injuries is much greater than the cost of workers' compensation alone." By: National Safety Council (NSC)

Jahleel Hilton's curator insight, March 5, 2014 12:40 AM

I often think about the deaths and the physical injuries that are caused by workplace accidents that I forget about the financial impact that they have on our nation. From workers compensation to medical costs and profit loss it seems like such a high price to pay for situations that can and should be easily avoided.

Dan Andreasen's curator insight, March 22, 2015 7:21 PM

I believe that the personal cost of a workplace injury can and will in most cases outweigh the financial cost, but it’s hard to put a face and a story to WHS statistics, that is why I believe this info-graphic is so great at explaining and highlighting some of the hidden costs that a WHS incident carries with it, it gives us a clear financial reason as to why it is such an important issue for our society to tackle, both now and in the future.

Five years from now I hope to be able to make a positive change to statistics such as these, as I believe that there are still plenty of room for improvements in regards to WHS.
