Paramedic left injured man in field in case cows attacked - Telegraph

Paramedic left injured man in field in case cows attacked - Telegraph | OHS quest | Scoop.it
A paramedic called to assist a seriously injured pensioner who had been trampled by cows waited in her car for 10 minutes because she considered it unsafe to help.
Alaine Burgess's insight:

And here is another aspect of potential threats to paramedics on the job... not usual surely... but this article is critical of a paramedic who waited for further assistance before proceeding into a potentially dangerous situation.

Ambulance Crash Test - Paramedic Head Injuries on Cabinet

Ambulance Crash Test Video - Example of How Cabinets and Ledges Cause Paramedic Injuries During Emergency Vehicle Collisions.

Via Becky Nott (Humanity OHS)
Alaine Burgess's insight:

Of particular interest in emergency vehicle collisions is the fact that paramedics and patients are often unrestrained while life saving medical interventions are performed in the back.  Even if the paramedics or the patient are restrained, the fact that they are not in a traditional vehicle with it's airbags and other protective features - and also that patients and paramedics are often not facing forwards - means serious injuries can occur.

Surviving An Ambulance Crash 101 | EMS Questions 3/28/13

http://turbomedic.com Ambulance crashes seem to be on the rise. Along with that are injuries to both EMS providers and patients. While this may be seen more ...
Alaine Burgess's insight:

Certainly for the paramedics, being involved in an MVA in their ambulance can be devastating... not only because they could be injured or killed, but also because the person they were on the way to attend might have a negative outcome, and others on the road or near it might be injured as well.

D.C. paramedic Gene Ryan told News4 he is planning to sue the D.C. Fire and EMS Department Monday due to mismanagement.
Alaine Burgess's insight:

I found this fascinating... we have on-going similar concerns in most ambulance services in Australia.   Certainly protection and correct use of controlled substances within a workplace is a really interesting side of OHS/WHS.

This is the scene where the ambulance is rammed off the road by a member of the public holding a grudge.

You'd be amazed how many members of the public fail to give way to emergency vehicles under lights and sirens.  Of course, this just falls into the "I can't believe ANYONE would do that!" category.

Via Johnny Steyn
Alaine Burgess's insight:

This leads to all sorts of interesting OHS/WHS questions.  For instance, when patients are kept waiting on ambulance beds becuase the emergency departments cannot offload them, there are less ambulances out on the road to respond to emergencies.  This puts every ambulance crew under pressure to work faster and not call for assistance to load a patient that might be difficult to extract.  In turn, this can lead to more injuries in paramedics.

Motorcycle Accidents vs. Car Accidents

Motorcycle Accidents vs. Car Accidents | OHS quest | Scoop.it
When compared to other vehicle accidents, motorcycle accidents are in a different category.

Via Matthew A. Dolman
Alaine Burgess's insight:

Certainly seems to be that the law of the road prevails... "The biggest vehicle usually wins!"   That puts motorcyclists all out of luck.  As a motorcyclist myself, I find it puzzling and concerning that so many younger people still feel that it is okay to not wear protective gear and take dangerous risks while on a motorbike.

Alaine Burgess's insight:

Besides the fact that looking at car accidents without actually being involved is far preferable to the alternative, what I found most interesting about this was just how easily and quickly these incidents happened.  I think it would be interesting to compile stats on what causes people to crash, and then brainstorm ways to try and prevent them.  And thank goodness that living in Australia we don't have to worry about snow like they do in Russia!!!
