In regards to the ergonomics and workplace layout inside the news agency. The risk of being involved with an armed hold-up and cash handling threat is a serious matter as their have been several cases where other news agency have been affected from robberies.
This link shows a guideline of work practices and principles in dealing with the events of an armed robbery.
The particular environment of a news agency as the employee has the duty of care to identify the hazards by recognizing which may cause injury or harm to their health or others and to be able to assess the risk which involves taking a look at the possibility of injury from being exposed to the risk of armed robbery. Finally controlling the risk by introducing measures which would either eliminate or reduce the risk of the person being exposed to the hazard.
Also this guideline also shows the required training and procedures that need to be followed by the staff if ever in the situation.
Quest 3 - This particular PDF shows the principles of effective OHS Risk Management.
The purpose of this particular pdf in relation to the risk management of a work place is that it shows a clear understanding of set guidelines and principles of upholding risk management.
No. 1 Senior Management Leadership and Commitment
Shows that it is a key element of model is senior management leadership and commitment. For an OHS risk management strategy to be successful in an agency, it must be driven by senior
management. This is the level of management responsible for making critical decisions in terms of organisational values, priorities and future directions. Risk management is most effective when it is integrated into the initial stages of business and strategic planning.
No 2. Focuses on Active Involvement of each Individual in
The active involvement of each individual in the workplace is essential for the success of any OHS management program, and helps to develop a ‘safety culture’ in the workplace. Open communication between management and employees assists in encouraging support for and involvement in OHS activities.
3. Effective Communication through Consultation
One of the primary objectives of the OHS Act is “to foster a co-operative consultative relationship between employers and employees on the health, safety and welfare of such employees at work”.
4. Provision of Appropriate Information, Education and Training
As noted in section 1, Section 16 of the OHS Act requires an employer to “take all reasonably practicable steps to protect the health and safety at work of their employees”. Part of this duty is to ensure that employees are adequately instructed and trained in safe systems of work.
5. Hazard Identifi cation, Risk Assessment and Risk Control at Workplace Level
Identifying hazards, undertaking risk assessment and implementing control measures are the key aspects of risk management. The aim of OHS Risk Management is to reduce the likelihood and consequence of a workplace incident that may result in injury or disease. It is a planned and systematic process for controlling workplace health and safety hazards through examination of all aspects of the work undertaken.
6. Development and Implementation of Appropriate OHS Management Information Systems
Risk Management processes are cyclical in nature and the activities should be treated as ongoing. In this sense, risk management is a method of continuous improvement in the decision making process and facilitates continuous improvement in OHS performance.
The task that I have chosen is dealing with the ergonomics of a confined area. This particular link shows how ergonomics within a workplace is dealt with.
Confined Spaced or enclosed spaced inside a work place is a health and safety issue. Some of these issues that would arise when taking a look at the ergonomics of the newsagency store that Taj works in the risks that are involved are :
Limited spacing, Poor work station set up, managing inappropriate External Stake holder behavior.
The particular link that I have chosen shows the importance and understanding of ergonomics in regards to Occupational Health and Safety.
Here is a list below of what an OHS officer would need to do when dealing with ergonomics of confined spacing.
What do I need to do?
Consult with Health and Safety Representatives (HSR) and employees to determine whether confined spaces are present at your workplace and make sure they are appropriately signed and that access is restricted to prevent the entry of unauthorised people;
Make sure the necessary information is entered on the local OHS Risk Register (Excel - 1.1Mb);Make sure openings for entry to and exit from a confined space are of an adequate size to allow the rescue of all persons if required in an emergency;Make sure that all persons required to work in or on a confined space, or to perform associated work such as the issuing of entry permits are trained to conduct that work; Before any work is conducted in or on a confined space, conduct a risk assessment to identify the hazards associated with the confined space, the work to be done and how identified risks will be controlled;Make sure emergency procedures including equipment and competent rescue persons are established and implemented;Conduct appropriate atmospheric testing and monitoring prior to and during work in or on a confined space;Make sure that stand-by person(s) are present outside a confined space when any person is inside the confined space; andMake sure that any employee or contractor who must enter a confined space on your premises is issued with an entry permit.
Hi all this is my girlfriend Remma she is a Tafe student studying Beautician and Hair dressing. The reason I chose this particular photo was because it showed the environment of the work area Remma is associated with as she is currently waxing my Other best friend Mikael :P.
The OHS issues that may arise when working in a beauty salon and hair salon are: Working with chemical agents that could lead to slips and falls via spillage. Working with bleach or different types of dyes as the skin can have a reaction if intact with causing irritation's and may lead to slight burns of the skin depending on the chemicals.
Now as a Tafe student the issues involved are Remma is inexperienced and still learning so that could affect how the patent is in the photo of waxing. Inductions and training methods would give Remma enough knowledge to be competent at her job.
Since working with other students this is also considered another issue as working with chemicals could lead to tamper and contamination .
Manual handling is a another issue that arise within this work environment as not being able to use the tools and equipment in a correct and safe manner could lead to potentially harming themselves or others. for example: cutting with the scissors, using the hair straighteners, using of the wax pot, and mixing of bleach and dyes.. etc.
Ergonomics of the workstation is another issue - Throughout the workstations within Tafe Rockhampton, the stations are cluster, and due to poor workstation set ups injuries can arise.
Anyways those are the basic OHS issues for the line of work that Remma would be faced with :)
Hi all this is one of my friends, her name is Kathleen she currently is a full time worker at Priceline, the reason I chose to take a photo of her was because she is the girlfriend of Taj, :) So within in this photo you can see that the OHS issues that are involved are: Manual handling lifting of the boxes in an awkward manner which could lead to strains within the lower back(lumbar region), however the ergonomics within the store isn't as confined as the news agency, in the photo of Taj's as there are spaces and clear pathways to walk either side on. Another issue that arise is.. that Kathleen is at a risk towards slips and falls as she is constantly moving around work lifting objects.
Anyways that's all for Kathleen :) on a random note I think it's very cute how the place Taj works in is right next door to where Kathleen works :)
Quest 3- Managing aggression inside the workplace.
This particular link is related to how one would be able to manage Inappropriate External Stakeholder Behavior.
This handbook provides a framework to identify, prevent and manage aggression and violence in health industry workplaces.
Inside any work place dealing with inappropriate external stakeholder behavior is important as the purpose of a risk management is to aim or eliminate or reduce the risk of injury and illness associated with work. . It is a continuous process of hazard
identification, risk assessment and control, and evaluation of control measures. Consultation between employers, workers, OHS and HSRs is required to determine the methods to be used in managing and controlling risks.
The particular involvement of this is dealing with customers, Inside the news agency, since its a constant on going job, there are times that security might be arise as the issue and that the employee is at risk. There have been numerous amounts of robberies that reside in Rockhampton in particular news agencies
Having the controls and implementation of proper WHS training on managing behaviors would prevent injuries if a situation were to occur.
Sitting incorrectly for long periods can have serious health consequences. To maintain a healthy posture and work more comfortably, here are tips on how to set up your workspace. Adjust chair height so that your feet are flat on the floor....
Mhelgan Prince Delantar's insight:
Quest 3- How to set up an Ergonomically Correct work station.
This particular link shows the basic risk management and prevention of how to properly set up a work station correctly.
The purpose of having correct workstations set up inside any work place are to minimize the risks and control any unaware, potential hazards inside the workstation.
Poor workstation set up can lead to harming not only the employee themselves but also others. From poor work station set ups it was found that it is one of the major causes in work- related injuries from cuts, to slips and falls.
This link shows some brief example on how risk management would take on its involvement on the particular issue. Examples such as :
Maintaining a healthy posture throughout commencing work, and setting up the desk and surroundings.
Having the correct posture, can reduce the risk of MSD related injuries.
Hello everyone this is my friend Brandon Brown his occupation is a full time student at Central Queensland University, he is currently in the Second year of his degree in nursing. I was lucky enough to obtain this photo from him and I think it shows a good environment of what his potential future would be..
The OHS issues that are involved within this particular photo are: Manual Handling : Is one of the main issues Nurses are faced with as not having the correct technique to use the proper tools and equipment could be dangerous.. as stakeholders such as the patients could be affected from in proper usage of the tools and equipment.
Also to mention moving patients from one bay to another is taken into consideration as running into objects throughout the hospital or clinic they are associated with would affect the patient on the stroller or wheelchair. Setting up the beds for where patients have to sit/lay must be supervised so that they strapped in and no potential risk of falling off would occur. Strains on the lower back, upper torso and lower region will be addressed from using these equipment
The ergonomic of the hospital is very confined as employees running in and out through halls so the risk is very high for injuries and incidents to occur.
Having the correct PPE is required as a face mask prevents inhalation of unknown substances that could be contagious entering the system.. Along with the gowns to prevent spillage applying onto themselves.
Another issue Brandon is faced with is slips/spills and falls through obstruction of objects or floors being wet from the equipment and tools they are using.
Working with medicine is a issue as if giving the wrong medicine to a patient could affect them.
The patient itself could be an issue as they could harm the nurses from being discomfort or having random burst of anger from reaction to the drug they were given.
Anyways those are the some of the potential risk involved whilst working in the environment of a hospital or clinic.
Hello all :) so let me start by giving a brief background of myself, My name is Mhelgan Delantar however my friends and family call me " Prince" my current occupation is A full time student at Central Queensland University. I am studying a bachelors of Occupational Health and Safety in my 3rd year of the course. My nationality is filipino and I am a Australian citizen. With this particular photo I was getting ready to go onto a site visit that I had to do at my previous residential school.
The OHS that arise within the sites were : exposures to chemicals and substances where safety goggles had to be worn, Working with machinery now as a student I am unaware of how to use the actual machine since we were only doing an observation at the time so the issue here would be inexperienced and lack of training. Inductions would help this area so I would have some knowledge of what I was working with.
The reason for my uniform was so I was visible at all cost as constant machinery's and vehicles are being operated on so that there would be less of a chance of me being an obstruction and getting trampled on or hit...
Now it was a requirement of Safety boots due to the fact that all sites that work with any heavy machinery or working with tools must have safety boots on. As they prevent any heavy objects that may fall onto your foot damaging your foot.
Another issue that was raised whilst working on site is manual handling lifting objects in awkward positions could lead to strains and muscle's being torn. The lower back is affected if any lifts were awkward.
Anyway's that's it for me folks :)) ps. I'm sorry for the bad screen shot was the best photo I could find.
Hi all, this is my best friend Taj Mora, he currently studies as a full time student at CQU. This is a photo of him during work at the local news agency , The task he is performing within this photo is placing down tags on magazines. The OHS issues in regards to this photo are: The ergonomics of the work station that he is assigned with as it is very confined space along with lack of movement due to all the objects and his surroundings. Within the local news agency certain risk are involved such as slips & falls are a factor with how the shop is set up, manual handling is another risk to look at on how Taj picks up any of the magazines, or in some very rare cases the possibilities of Theft and Robbery is another risk as in previous times the actual News agency store has been robbed.
