How does one de- stress?

How does one de- stress? | OHS: Puni Tairea | Scoop.it

Lawrence, occupation, Assistant Manager Construction Company, He travels to various countries in the world building mega bridges. Lawrence comes from the islands, lives in Sydney and this is how he de-stresses. Acoording to Lawrence working as a construction worker is very stressful and Safety is taken way too far to the extreme. Jobs that can be done in less than half an hour to complete can sometimes take more than two hours to complete, because the OHS bureaucrats wants the job assessed for safety, then the right paper work work has to be filled out signed and approved before you can make a start. It can be stressful when you are trying to finish the job on time because of time constraints. Its very stressful, this is why I comeback here to de-stress.

Waipuni Tairea's insight:

I just witness Lawrence climb a coconut tree without any safety harness, this would cause an OHS professional to have a heart attack but if this is how he de stresses, where does OHS safety draw the line? I can understand the concerns that Lawrence voiced out, with the pressure of getting a job complete and the extra pressure from the OHS personnels to get the jobs assessed for safety and the relevant paper works done, does present a problem on the construction sites. I think that the cost factor of completing a job on time puts extra pressure on contractors when a half an hour job takes two two hours to complete due to OHS safety issues. I suppose at the same time there is more pressure on the OHS professional to make sure that the task is carried out safely and accordingly with all the pressure from contractors and the construction companies. What's the solution ?

Farmer deaths high compared to other industries
ABC Online
Farmers point to the fact that their work is usually outdoors, involves working with heavy machinery and livestock, all activities with inherent risks which can't always be controlled.
Waipuni Tairea's insight:

"Agriculture employs only three per cent of the workforce but makes up a quarter of workplace deaths each year."

"This makes farming more dangerous than working in construction or mining."

Obviously an issue that needs addressing, but not an easy fix.

Island feast preparation

Island feast preparation | OHS: Puni Tairea | Scoop.it

Timu is a proud Island man, lives off the land and works at the Public works. Timu is the guy holding the piece of meat to be chopped, he was a bit hesitant answering the questions. This is Timu's insight on safety when asked about the risks he takes at holding the meat to be chopped; This is what he said when I asked him about the risks and danger of what he was doing,  what danger there is no danger here , there is no risks, I trust him cutting the meat and he trusts me holding the meat. If I don't trust him I won't hold the meat and it's the same with Ngere, if he does not trust me he will not cut the meet. I know that he will not trust you to hold the meat.

Waipuni Tairea's insight:

This is really amazing how these guys have no worries of safety within the concepts of OHS. They are so comfortable with what they are doing and have been doing for along time without accidents, its everyday living for them. From an OHS point of view, the work these guys are doing are not acceptable and presents  very high risks of getting hurt. From a OHS professional, what do you do? How do you tell these people that, what they are doing offers great opportunity of getting hurt or worse?
