SeaWorld claims ethics breaches by OSHA investigator

SeaWorld claims ethics breaches by OSHA investigator | OHS Quest 1: The diversity of OH&S | Scoop.it
SeaWorld is requesting the U.S. Department of Labor investigate the conduct of investigator Lara Padgett, alleging she violated the ethics code

Emily Frankcombe's insight:

A very interesting article, I have followed this story very briefly starting from the death of the SeaWorld employee, but it seems now that the workplace health and safety officer who investigated the case is being accused of being bias in a retaliation against the investigation results.

Seaworld were ordered to restrict interactions between animals and handlers/trainers, as well as fined as a result of the investigation and it seems they are responding by sharpening their knives.

An interesting insight to pushing the limits of entertainment by compromising health and safety. SeaWorld were responsible for the safety of their employees, but animals are unpredictable. What safety features could have been in place to prevent this terrible accident from occurring? What safety features WERE in place, and were they adhered to? Was the outcome of the investigation affected by the personal opinions of the OH&S officer? Some big questions!

Aquatic enhances health and safety training for offshore personnel - Your Oil and Gas News (press release)

Aquatic enhances health and safety training for offshore personnel Your Oil and Gas News (press release) As a responsible employer working in a high-risk industry, we cannot afford to be complacent about the health and safety of our people.”...
Emily Frankcombe's insight:

A very positive article featuring an offshore oil and gas company commissioning a health and safety company to provide a customised safety course in working at heights for its employees. This article highlights some of the important aspects of health and safety, such as practicability and response guidelines for emergency situations. Though the article is bias (sourced from the oil and gas company) it is good to see their attention is focused on the safety of their employees.

Occupational Asthma — NEJM

Review Article from The New England Journal of Medicine — Occupational Asthma.
Emily Frankcombe's insight:

This is a simple review of an article available to subscribers, however further research into "Occupational Asthma" raises a very interesting topic, where employees are working in conditions that expose them to an irritant which then triggers a decrease in respiratory functioning (narrowing of airways, buildup of mucus). It is common health conditions such as these that we must be made aware of in order to assess hazards that are specific not only to the occupation, but to the individual employee carrying out the occupation.

Virgin America safety video turns compliance into culture | ParkHowell.com

Virgin America safety video turns compliance into culture | ParkHowell.com | OHS Quest 1: The diversity of OH&S | Scoop.it
Storytelling turns a compliance-driven safety video into a spectacular song and dance cultural piece for Virgin America. Take note, chief sustainability officers.

Via NRG_ENV, Blair Kettle
Emily Frankcombe's insight:

This is a fantastic example of how to make workplace health and safety fun and interesting. Virgin America adopted a fresh approach to their safety messages for passengers and turned an otherwise boring lecture into something far more interesting. Health and Safety is extremely important, however the delivery of information and communications between affected persons should be considered carefully to ensure the message is both remembered and adhered to.

Blair Kettle's curator insight, November 8, 2013 5:55 PM

An excellent way of communucating safety rules and procedures. It's a humorous and socially intelligent communication that takes direct aim at indifference and resistance to compliance. It maintains the seriousness of passenger safety and puts it squarely in the realm of a cultural norm. To fly means that we all need to know and obey the rules. No debate.

Supervisor Jailed 45 Days For Occupational Health And Safety Act Violation | JD Supra

Emily Frankcombe's insight:

Another very serious example of the consequences of overlooking or "dodging around" health and safety in the workplace. Although this case is specific for Canada, the message is universal. Each country (and states within countries) has specific OH&S and industry standards and these must be complied to in order to protect both employers and employees. Overlooking workplace hazards and potential risk has serious consequences.

Builder in court for concrete burn failings - Health and Safety Executive (press release)

Builder in court for concrete burn failings Health and Safety Executive (press release) Mr Cinko was prosecuted today (11 March) by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after an investigation found he failed in his duty of care as an employer to...
Emily Frankcombe's insight:

This article highlights the serious consequences of not following health and safety obligations and requirements. Two seriously injured workers and a very costly court case for the builder is a result of overlooking the occupational hazard of chemical reactions on human skin over time. This could be due to time management, perhaps the builder had a certain length of time to complete a contract and thus pushed his workers too far. Or it could be as simple as the workers not being made to wear the correct personal safety equipment necessary for the job. Either way, it was a costly lesson.

10 Strange Occupational Hazards

10 Strange Occupational Hazards Want to be a rose gardner? How about a nun? Then you might need insurance. Presenting 10 strange occupational hazards. Music ...
Emily Frankcombe's insight:

These strange hazards are mostly related to occupations and situations from many years gone by, however I find this video to be an important lesson that is still relevant. This lesson is that regardless of our advancement in OH&S over the past years, we cannot assume that we have identified all possible hazards in every occupation (even unusual ones!). Each unique occupation carries their own unique set of hazards, and we should not generalise.

It is also exciting to think that as an OH&S graduate we are able to work anywhere that involves the health and safety of people and the environment...which is just about everywhere!
