Schubert's Ninth and Gil Shaham | KC Symphony Podcast

The great violinist Gil Shaham returns to the stage to perform Alban Berg’s haunting Violin Concerto, dedicated “to the memory of an angel.” In keeping with that sentiment, the concert opens with Carl Ruggles’ Angels for muted brass. Franz Schubert’s magnificent Ninth Symphony, one of the greatest orchestral works of all time, provides the perfect conclusion to the program. Concerts are May 31 - June 2, 2013 in Helzberg Hall at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.

Next month, the Missouri Symphony Society will kickoff its annual Hot Summer Nights music festival. This year’s lineup features over 20 performances, spanning a variety of genres. That list includes traditional classical and opera, as well as more contemporary fare, including tributes to Michael Jackson and Elton John. There’ll also be a number of kid-friendly events, including one that draws upon the connections between pizza and music.

One night the owner was drunk or high, I’m not sure which, and talking obnoxiously loud right in the middle of the room, at a table up front, near the stage. The speakers dangling from the ceiling in there were never all that great. Sitting at the bar, I couldn’t enjoy the singer or the band. Dismayed, I left.
