The click of a hair curler and a spritz of hairspray punctuated conversation in the small side room of Monarch Watch, a conservation project based at the University of Kansas. Normally home to a display of tarantulas, the room was transformed into a dressing room for New York-based dancer Gwynedd Vetter-Drusch wearing a black unitard decorated with sequins. In one corner of the room were the vividly-colored orange and black silk butterfly wings leaned against the wall that would complete her metamorphosis.

Every time you think you’ve seen the best show Kansas City has to offer another opening night proves they only get better. Case in point; enter a sweet transvestite from Trans-Sexual Transylvania. Opening night for the Rocky Horror Show was Wednesday June 19 at the Off Center Theatre in Crown Center. Opening night coincided with the 40th birthday of the first show produced June 19, 1973 at the Royal Court Theater Upstairs in London, England. The cult classic, created by Richard O’Brien who wrote the book, music and lyrics, was produced by Egads Theatre Company and directed by Steven Eubank.

The state's commerce secretary banked more than half the $700,000 earmarked this past year for sponsorship of creative endeavors in Kansas.

Secretary Pat George — in collaboration with the administration of Gov. Sam Brownback — ordered $400,000 of the appropriation to the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission be saved and reallocated during the next two fiscal years.
