He didn't just enjoy writing arrangements for big bands, he was terrific at it. And he had been a member of the orchestra since its start.

I hate opera. I know, I know. Why the heck did I see this show? Well the burlesque angle of course.

So you hate opera as well? Not content to hear songs in a language that makes it impossible to understand? Think you may be moved to tears like all the people in movies are when they see an opera? Bored? Some people hear the word opera and run the other way. I mean opera at the fringe?!

I sat in one of the big, plush chairs up front, the one that seems to swallow you up, because all other seats were filled. I’d heard a variation of this group here last year. Andy’s rugged yet sinuous tenor sax bounced off of and wove through Hermon’s always inventive trumpet. That’s when I decided this is the group I wanted to open this year’s Prairie Village Jazz Festival.

1983 saw the rebirth of the Kansas City Jazz Festival. Organizers wisely placed a call for volunteers in the program, to help plan and organize the 1984 event. I was looking for an entrée to civic involvement and responded. I remained involved, to varying degrees, through the next seven festivals.
