Aaron Barksdale-Burns and his family have been supporting the arts for more than 25 years. Adding support to the Sweet Adelines is recent, but growing. “We fell into support of the Sweet Adelines because I met Carol Schumacher at a Burns & McDonnell event at Californos. We are big into the vocal music scene and before meeting here, I had no idea that there was such a talented group of ladies, competing and performing barbershop music as they do,” he says. “I was very impressed and thought, maybe some of these people don’t know about Californos yet. We aim to set a table for the Sweet Adelines in hopes that a feast will ensue!”
Although resident ensemble Alarm Will Sound understandably attracts a lot of attention during the Mizzou International Composers Festival, let’s not forget that the “Mizzou New Music” concert on Friday, July 26 at the Missouri Theatre will showcase the Mizzou New Music Initiative’s “home team,” the Mizzou New Music Ensemble.

For more than 35 years, the Lawrence Arts Center has run Summer Youth Theatre, an intensive theater arts program for kids in grades three through 12. This summer, the troupe has already tackled Macbeth and Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance. Opening this weekend is a newly commissioned play that, as its title implies, claims to present The Complete History of Kansas in Sixty Minutes.
Kelly Felthous, who plays Gloria in Flashdance –The Musical at Starlight Theatre, was joined by 11 Starlight STARS of Tomorrow on July 11 to learn a dance number to “Maniac” from the show. Starlight STARS of Tomorrow is a musical theatre training and performance program for 7th through 12th grade students.
