All these Ladies were wonderful with a great energy. There was a surprise lyra performer and fitness pole dancer. They also had a newer performer doing a fan dance and then a different style of dancing with a geometrical type of ball. Very neat, very different.

What's New in KC Dance | KC Independent

What's New in KC Dance | KC Independent | OffStage | Scoop.it

If you want to build a dance festival from scratch, the key is collaboration. When veteran Kansas City Ballet dancers Logan Pachciarz and Anthony Krutzkamp determined to create an off-season dance performance, their goals were twofold: to provide work for dancers and choreographers from various companies during the lean summer months, and to present work to Kansas City audiences that we might not normally see otherwise.

Locals providing work for fellow choreographers in an outlet that gets their name out--huge help. Or I could be the one creating an independent show myself.

Focus On KC Ballet Artistic Director Devon Carney | KC Independent

Focus On KC Ballet Artistic Director Devon Carney | KC Independent | OffStage | Scoop.it

It must be an exciting time to be Devon Carney. After a long career that included distinguished stints as principal dancer for Boston Ballet and as associate artistic director at Cincinnati Ballet, the 53-year-old dancer/choreographer is now faced with his biggest challenge: to lead the Kansas City Ballet into a new era, one in which there seem to be no limits. “It’s a big responsibility and I take it seriously,” says Carney, who assumes his post as artistic director on July 1st. Our recent conversation ranged widely, from his plans for a second company at KCB to his goal of presenting more full-length ballets (and yes, a new Nutcracker). Meanwhile he and his wife, dancer Pamela Royal Carney, are looking for a place to live in a city they’re excited about. Below is a transcript of portions of our conversation.

Concern For Monarch Butterflies Inspires Dancer To Action | KCUR | OffStage | Scoop.it

The click of a hair curler and a spritz of hairspray punctuated conversation in the small side room of Monarch Watch, a conservation project based at the University of Kansas. Normally home to a display of tarantulas, the room was transformed into a dressing room for New York-based dancer Gwynedd Vetter-Drusch wearing a black unitard decorated with sequins. In one corner of the room were the vividly-colored orange and black silk butterfly wings leaned against the wall that would complete her metamorphosis.

Elizabeth DeLuce's curator insight, November 3, 2014 5:55 PM

Dancers can find inspiration and influences from many different sources. I like how unique this is to her life, and how she is using her own experiences. That is how you truly produce something that is genuine, powerful and original.
