Clear and mild with occasional light, gusty winds. A weather forecast, perhaps, but this could also serve as a description of Vladimir Feltsman’s recital on September 27th at the Folly Theater, the opening of the Friends of Chamber Music’s 38th season. It was a low-key affair, with flashes of brilliance and no small measure of the sharp musical insights for which the great Russian-born American pianist is known.

Dracula is always on the look-out for another satisfying meal of human blood. The Coterie Theatre and Community Blood Center, the primary supplier of blood for area hospitals will help satisfy that thirst with a blood drive on Saturday, October 19 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The drive will take place in the Coterie Lab, next to the box office on level one at Crown Center. A coupon for one free admission to any performance of Dracula: The Journal of Jonathan Harker will be given to all that donate to this worthy cause.

I’m glad now I never wrote it. Now I recognize these are two different events.

Two years ago I planned to type a blog post comparing the Prairie Village Jazz Festival to the Rhythm and Ribs Festival (this year renamed Kansas City’s 18th and Vine Jazz and Blues Festival). But the Prairie Village event was rained out. I then planned to write it last year, until Rhythm and Ribs was hit by rain.

Poor Lear

A re-imagining of Shakespeare's King Lear. A homeless man enacts the roles in the main tragic story of a king who divides his kingdom between his three daughters and is thrown out of doors to face the elements with his fool and come to terms with his own mortality. Peformed by Alan Tilson, a member of the Core Acting company with Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre. The show will benefit the Homeless Services Coalition of Greater Kansas City and the Episcopal Community Services.
