Ain’t Misbehavin’ is the only musical revue to win a Tony Award for Best Musical and the Drama Desk award for Outstanding Musical. The revue has music and lyrics from a variety of composers and lyricists and a book by Murray Horwitz and Richard Maltby, Jr. The musical opened in 1978 at the Longacre Theatre on Broadway and ran for 1,604 performances. A tribute to the black musicians of the Harlem Renaissance takes the title of the Thomas “Fats” Waller song of the same name.

The email came in March 2008 from Vi Tran’s former theater professor at Kansas State University. Vi, then 27, was a previous fellowship recipient, and he emailed Mackenzie Goodwin, then 20, saying he’d be glad to advise her. He never heard back.
