For the past 17 years, these awards have recognized the achievements of Lawrence residents working in the visual, literary, musical, theatrical and media arts. For more than 35 years, the Lawrence Arts Center has run Summer Youth Theatre, an intensive theater arts program for kids in grades three through 12. This summer, the troupe has already tackled Macbeth and Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance. Opening this weekend is a newly commissioned play that, as its title implies, claims to present The Complete History of Kansas in Sixty Minutes.

Kasi Brown was working as an EMT on a set for a commercial in Los Angeles recently when a dangerous stunt went horribly wrong. “This guy who was doing his first ramp jump had to jump over a tractor in downtown L.A.,” she says. “He went up on the ramp 35 feet in the air, and his motorcycle chipped sideways and landed on top of him, narrowly missing the camera crew that was right below.”

Say you have a brand new, state-of-the-art theater. What’s the perfect show to open with?

It should be something big. Something that takes advantage of the space, involves as many people as possible and is absolutely electrifying. What do you choose? “Phantom of the Opera”? “Les Misérables”? “The King and I”?

Theatre Lawrence went a different route. Rather than a famous, all-time favorite, they selected “Ragtime,” the musical story of America at the turn of the 20th century.

A national grant will enable the Lawrence Arts Center to take its next Free State Film Festival beyond the Arts Center walls, and even beyond film.

The Arts Center received a $150,000 Our Town grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, expected to be formally announced today.

Doug Weaver isn’t superstitious. At least not about theater.

“I’m intensely superstitious when it comes to my golf game,” he says. “But not when it comes to theater.”

So the prospect of directing the most legendarily cursed play of all time — William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” — didn’t daunt him. In fact, he was looking forward to it.
