Quest 3- Office Based Worker Risk #1: Posture

Posture is essential when it comes to Office Based Work. We know that many of us have jobs that require us to spend majority of our day at desks so knowing how to sit with a 'good posture' is certinately important and beneficial to one's health and well-being. Unfortunately, there is not alot of research into how to exactly adopt a 'good' posture. There was a study conucted in 1999 which found that sitting at an angle of 110 degrees to 130 degrees is optimal for spine comfort and another study was conducted in 2007, found that leaning back at 135 degrees is ideal for preventing back strains. These types of positions are quite difficult to measure and mantain throughout the day.

Quest 3- Office Based Worker: Risk #3 Office Designs

Every employers goal is to uphold a productive and efficient workplace, but there are many common office  habits and factors that contribute to the output of work. It is important to make the office space as comfortable as possible, seeing as research has proven that your work environment has an impact on how you function at work. There are many ways you can ensure that your office space is as comfortable as possible:

LIGHTING:

Research has shown bad lighting can cause eye strain and fatigue, simply by raising light levels in the office it increases productivity by 8% and decreases accidents by 52%. Also access to natural light is crucial and research has again shown that exposure to daylight vs artifical light enhances alertness and cognitive functioning.

COLOUR:

Research has shown that colour effects mood productivity and that both white and grey can be un-motivating. Different colours have different wavelengths and the level of wavelength determins how much energy we need to exert to detect it.

TEMPERATURE:

Occupational Health and Safety Administration recommends office temperatures to be slightly warmer. Research from Cornwell found that when the temperature of an office is raised, typing errors fell by 44% and work output increased dramatically.

SPACE:

To be more productive at work, you have to be comfortable both physically and psychologically. From a physical or ergonomic perspective, the position of your keyboard, screen/s and chair all make a huge impact on how you function and the level of fatigue you will likely experience.
