Create an eBook from Online Articles

Create an eBook from Online Articles | offene ebooks & freie Lernmaterialien (epub, ibooks, ibooksauthor) | Scoop.it

This is a great way to create eBooks from your own online content or from any content you find online.
You can create and share reading lists for courses. Create your own eBooks of yours or your students' stories. Create your own collection of your favourite articles. Collect a reading list of articles to read when you don't have an Internet connection. Webpages that you capture in this way can be much easier to read and of course you have all the eBook's mark up and note taking functions which will store all your annotations on the eBooks you create.

January's announcement of iBooks Author, Apple's free tool for creating multi-touch books for the iPad, was big news for educators
...
.We expect to see iBooks replace many “click next to continue” eLearning courses for companies who have adopted the iPad. The wide variety of widgets and customizable HTML5 elements in the iBook make it a versatile medium, even without hefty programming know-how. And it’s just down-right enjoyable to navigate an iBook with your finger instead of clicking that dreaded “next” button.

There were not too many how-to guides out there on getting started with iBooks Author when we began our project, and most of the information we did find was introductory in nature. So if you are considering exploring this relatively new medium for your eLearning, have a look at what we loved and what challenged us during our first iBook project.

Free Technology for Teachers: 110 Page Guide to Publishing With iBooks Author | offene ebooks & freie Lernmaterialien (epub, ibooks, ibooksauthor) | Scoop.it

Apple's iBooks Author is an excellent tool for creating multimedia ebooks, but there are some elements of using it that can be confusing and or frustrating. While you can figure it all out on your own as you go, that's how I've been going about it, you can save yourself a bunch of time by reading a good guide ahead of time. I wish I had done that.

...

Publishing with iBooks Author is a free 110 page publication from O'Reilly Media.

http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920025597.do

...

I just discovered the guide a couple of days ago and I wish I had found it earlier because it would have saved me a lot of time in learning how to use iBooks Author. Publishing with iBooks Author covers everything from copyright, DRM, and the End User Agreement to templates, layouts, media insertion, publishing, and distribution. You will have to register for an O'Reilly Media account to download the book (that does take a few minutes and requires email verification) but I think that's a small price to pay for an excellent free ebook. Publishing with iBooks Author is available to download as an ePub file and as a PDF.

Self-publishing a book: 24 things you need to know | ePublish a Book

Self-publishing a book: 24 things you need to know | ePublish a Book | offene ebooks & freie Lernmaterialien (epub, ibooks, ibooksauthor) | Scoop.it

Self-publishing a book: 24 things you need to know:

1. Self-publishing is easy.

Self-publishing a print book is easy. Self-publishing an e-book is even easier.

To self-publish a print book:

Choose a size for your book, Format your Word manuscript to fit that size, Turn your Word doc into a PDF, Create some cover art in Photoshop, turn that into a PDF, Upload it all to the self-publisher of your choice, When getting the book proof back make necessary changes and swap in new PDFs, Publish

That is the easy part, then comes the rest…

2. To self-publish a digital book

In this day and age, it is preferable to begin by testing the waters with a digital book. If that seems to gain a decent readership, it is then time to think about print book. Of course starting with both print and digital books is always an option for optimistic writers,

Finalize your book in a Word or PDF file,

Convert it into on or more of the many e-book formats or just offer it as a download as a PDF.

Need an advance for your book? Get your future readers to fund you! | ePublish a Book | offene ebooks & freie Lernmaterialien (epub, ibooks, ibooksauthor) | Scoop.it

Back in the days when publishers where the only gateway to publish a book, writers received an advance upon signing their publishing contract.

...
With the growing success of self-publishing, two things have happened. Advances from established publishers for unknown authors have shrunk, the plethora of new publishers do not offer advances and self-publishers, of course, not only do not receive advances but have to self-finance the time they take to write, the editing and formatting of their book and the book cover

A New Kind of Book› What Readers Need vs. What Devices Can Do

A New Kind of Book› What Readers Need vs. What Devices Can Do | offene ebooks & freie Lernmaterialien (epub, ibooks, ibooksauthor) | Scoop.it

Most ebook experiments do a better job of showing off our devices rather than solving specific reader problems. We get video extras, web links, piped in Twitter feeds. Problem is, these “enhancements” often answer the wrong question: what can we add? In an age of Information Overload, readers don’t need more; they need help. A video of battle footage may be fun to watch, and a simple way to add what’s not possible in print. But what students of World War Two often struggle with is much more mundane: remembering key events for that upcoming test or prepping for an essay they’re writing.

Rather than starting from what the iPad or EPUB 3 makes possible, we should instead think about where print fails to solve readers’ needs. By keeping a simple question in mind regarding any enhancement — what’s it for? — I think we can create digital books that are superior to print in some really tangible ways.

Here are five different areas that offer some reader-friendly opportunities

...

eReader App Subtext Pivots To Education - Technology News - redOrbit

eReader App Subtext Pivots To Education - Technology News - redOrbit | offene ebooks & freie Lernmaterialien (epub, ibooks, ibooksauthor) | Scoop.it

When Subtext launched last year on the iPad, it sought to redefine social reading. Its slick eReader app made it easy to share comments and reading lists with other friends.

Recently Subtext has repositioned itself to focus on education, promising a solution for teachers who want to create collaboration around digital books. Teachers can post and answer questions, link to Web content and create assignments and quizzes inside of the app.
...

The book selection available directly inside of Subtext is minimal – though the ones for sale include some author videos and other special features. The fastest way to get books inside Subtext is through Google Books. Just visit Google Play Books, buy something that you want to read, and by linking your Google account with Subtext it will then appear on your shelf.

The purchasing limitation is to comply with Apple’s policies: third-party reading apps are not allowed to link to their store outside of their own application; an in-app store means sharing 30 percent of the revenue with Apple.

Google Play Books

...

Subtext has a separate teacher hub inside of the app to help streamline some of the education-focused features. However, Subtext co-founder Rachel Thomas said that everyday users would benefit from the tight integration of the closed circles.

In order to encourage its use in the classroom, Subtext is currently sponsoring a contest. The user who has the best idea for how to make the use of the app in their class will win ten iPads.

For those who don’t win the contest it may be a challenge getting an entire class focused on the same book. However, a combination of an iPad and Subtext may be what current students need to hook their interest.

Publishing is no longer a job or an industry -- it's a button

Publishing is no longer a job or an industry -- it's a button | offene ebooks & freie Lernmaterialien (epub, ibooks, ibooksauthor) | Scoop.it

"As author Clay Shirky points out, the simple act of publishing something -- whether it's a book or a news article -- doesn't require an industry any more, just a button." I missed this article by Mathew Ingram on GigaOm back in April but Chuck Sherwood brought it back to my attention and it's an interesting comment on Clay Shirky's "How we will read" series.

Obviously, as we're building a platform that aims at making publishing as easy than clicking on a bookmarklet, we don't disagree.

But what's left for publishers to differentiate upon then?

Well, plenty according to Shirky and Ingram. But provided they understand value-adding services and they're ready to give away distribution control.

Interestingly, I believe these points are interesting not just for large or traditionnal publishers but also individual curators.
