TidBITS Opinion: Notes, Quotes, and iBooks: sharing quotes & highlighted text possible??

TidBITS Opinion: Notes, Quotes, and iBooks: sharing quotes & highlighted text possible?? | offene ebooks & freie Lernmaterialien (epub, ibooks, ibooksauthor) | Scoop.it

by Michael E. Cohen, 07 Apr 2012 |

http://tidbits.com/author/Michael%20E.%20Cohen

...

What I find unacceptable are arbitrary drawbacks that are created deliberately by those who design and develop ebook-reading software. In particular, I’m appalled by the shortcomings with notes and quotes that ebook software developers design into their products, especially in light of the growing movement to replace traditional textbooks with their ebook equivalents.

...

Here are two things that students (and, in fact, many active readers) do with books:

They mark them up with notes and highlights.
They quote from them.

...

Notes -- At first glance, iBooks provides a breakthrough in book-marking power for the active reader. You can highlight passages in a variety of colors with just a swipe of the finger, and attach notes of arbitrary size to any passage without worrying whether there’s enough space in the margin to encompass your thoughts. Even better, you can take a quick trip to the Table of Contents in iBooks to see all of your notes and markups, along with their context, and get to any of them with a single tap. Sweet.

...

Not sweet? Getting those notes and markups out of the book so you can use them elsewhere. Tap the Share button (that swooshy arrow in a box) on the upper-right corner of the Notes page and you see the tantalizing options to print your notes and send them via email. ... What you can’t print or email is the context attached to each note. The passage that you highlighted, and which appears on the Notes page in iBooks, is not included in whatever is printed or sent via email. All you get is your note and an almost useless chapter name (or, in the case of a textbook, a page number) to accompany it. If margin notes constitute a conversation between a book and its reader, the exported notes in iBooks give you only one side of that conversation.

...

Quotes -- Students quote from books all the time. In fact, it is an activity that is often required by specific instructional assignments. Learning how to quote properly, cite accurately, and integrate quotations effectively into an argument are fundamental writing skills that students must learn. Yet iBooks provides scant help for this basic activity.

...

Certainly, if one is reading an unprotected ebook in iBooks, any selected text in the book is available for copying to the clipboard, from where it can be pasted into a word processing document, email message, or other text container. But that works only for unprotected books, and only for those ebooks in EPUB format. Surprisingly, even in an unprotected textbook produced by iBooks Author (which use Apple’s own proprietary Multi-Touch book format) the Copy command for selected text is missing in action.

Apple's new software lets anyone create digitally rich eBooks for iPads. iBooks Author experts Joe Wood and Burt Lo share why this new software is important and how to introduce it to schools right now.

Let’s get one thing straight: editing is not for the faint of heart.  It requires you to admit that parts of your novel either don’t add up or add up too much.  Word count could present a problem or characterization or plot or dialogue . . .  The list of what might go wrong is almost endless.  The good new is, as much as your characters stole the story from you, injecting it with their voices, this is your time to steal it back – just not too much.  At the heart of editing/revision problems is author intrusion, that little egoist voice that says, “Hey, remember me?  I’m the author.  Don’t forget!  I’m the one who makes this story amazing!”

Or sucky depending on how much you, the author, interfere.  While we’re at destroying illusions, let’s clear up another issue: this work is not your baby.  Treat it so this and you will refuse to see that your precious spawn has bulbous eyes, a bumpy, crooked nose, and bloated cheeks.

Interactive eBook Apps: The Reinvention of Reading and Interactivity | UX Magazine

Interactive eBook Apps: The Reinvention of Reading and Interactivity | UX Magazine | offene ebooks & freie Lernmaterialien (epub, ibooks, ibooksauthor) | Scoop.it

Avi Itzkovitch, April 12, 2012

...
(Sehr guter Überblick mit vielen Beispielen, die mit Videosequenzen vorgestellt werden.)

...

It’s important to understand the distinction between apps and eBooks, as it's something that often confuses both publishers and consumers. It basically comes down to formats; apps are mostly native iOS or Android software, whereas eBooks are documents of a particular format, such as the open standards EPUB and Mobipocket (.mobi). And eBooks can be further distinguished from “enhanced eBooks,” which use formats such as ePUB3 for iBooks (Apple) and Kindle Format 8 (KF8) for Kindle Fire (Amazon).

...

***eBooks

... were the first to appear on devices such as the Kindle, and have very limited interactivity. You are mainly able to flip the pages, search for content, or highlight words to see a dictionary definition. These devices also allowed font size to be increased to enable visually impaired readers enjoy books more easily. This gave publishers the unforeseen benefit of regaining a large population of users who couldn’t read printed books.

...

***Enhanced eBooks (ePUB3) are a new digital publication standard that allows easy integration of video, audio, and interactivity. I expect this format to advance the future of textbooks and other educational material. Future textbooks might be able to "read themselves" with audio narration, perhaps preventing students from actually reading. But the benefits outweigh the downsides; for example, the new text books might also offer the ability to make and share annotations without destroying the book, interactive self-tests throughout the chapters, and generally a much more enjoyable learning experience.

...

***Interactive eBooks is a category for apps designed specifically to utilize the powers of tablets to enable users to interact with the storyline in sight, sound, and touch. I like to think of interactive eBooks as an evolution of the printed book with added interactivity in order to create an experience beyond the printed format. Examples of interactive eBooks include pop-up book apps for kids, interactive travel guides that utilize the device GPS capabilities, cookbooks with built-in timers and video recipes, or any traditional book that now uses the tablet to enhance the experience with interactivity.

...

***Apple has recently released iBooks Author, a free eBook creation software that lets anyone with a Mac to create iBooks textbooks, cookbooks, history books, picture books, etc. iBooks Author generates a proprietary format for books that will only be available for sale on Apple devices.

...

Adobe has also made available a Digital Publishing Suite via InDesign for the iPad, Android, and Blackberry platforms.

...

Mag+ and Moglue are two other independent publishing platforms that are worth mentioning.

Booktype: Sourcefabric | offene ebooks & freie Lernmaterialien (epub, ibooks, ibooksauthor) | Scoop.it

The open source platform to write and publish print and digital books. Booktype is a free, open source platform that produces beautiful, engaging books formatted for print, Amazon, iBooks and almost any ereader within minutes. Create books on your own or with others via an easy-to-use web interface. Build a community around your content with social tools and use the reach of mobile, tablet and ebook technology to engage new audiences.

Email from Phil Barker of Heriot-Watt University: "It has a lot of features that seem to align well with OER.

The actual eBook production is pretty simple, there's a simple chapter editor (uses tinyMCE for wisywig HTML editing, which you'll probably be familiar with from WordPress) and equally straightforward means of managing and publishing chapters as a book. The formats supported include ePub, mobi (for kindle) and PDF each in various profiles.

There is some version management. You have to create a new version manually, so no quite the full roll-back that you get with wikis/CVSs/git. You do get a history of who has done what, but I don't see a way of getting at previous states of the book through that.

You can have multiple users working on a book, there are options for groups of users and user roles that I haven't really explored.

You can clone existing booktype content to get a new version for repurposing. (Copy and paste works OK for external content)

It has the right "open" credentials: it is open source (there is a hosted option or you can install it on your own servers), and you can chose CC licences when publishing.

That was enough to get me interested, has anyone else looked at it?"

TechCrunch | Apple Patents A Tool Allowing Non-Developers To Build Apps | offene ebooks & freie Lernmaterialien (epub, ibooks, ibooksauthor) | Scoop.it

SARAH PEREZ, Friday, April 13th, 2012

...

If you think the iOS app ecosystem is big now, as it pushes some 600,000 apps available for iPhone and iPad, just imagine how big it could become if Apple made good on this newly filed patent application titled “Content Configuration for Device Platforms.” The application describes a way for non-developers to create iOS apps using a simple, graphical interface.

...

http://www.freepatentsonline.com/y2012/0089933.html

...

Whoa.

Of course, it’s just a patent application, and Apple files tons of these things. So you can’t point to it and call out what it describes as a confirmed, forthcoming feature for the iOS platform.

...

But an Apple-provided DIY app building tool does makes some sense in terms of a way to envision the future of mobile computing. Remember, there was once a day when only “webmasters” could set up and maintain webpages. Now everyone just starts a Tumblr to share their thoughts with the world. Why shouldn’t everyone have the opportunity to try their hand at app creation, too?

...

Obviously, non-programmers today can build apps through the use of third-party app building services, but most mainstream users don’t know about those. Apple introducing a basic app builder of its own would serve to raise awareness about the existence of these kinds of tools.

...

Specifically, the patent app (unearthed by Appleinsider this week) describes something of a “WYSIWYG” (What you see is what you get) system for app building, stating the need to make app building more broadly accessible.

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/12/04/12/apple_wants_to_make_it_easy_for_non_programmers_to_build_ios_apps.html
...

Now all we need is a whole new user interface for our iOS devices themselves. Given that Apple has sold 316 million cumulative units of of year-end 2011, these sad, little app folders won’t be able to keep up with all the apps created by this possible DIY app explosio
