A huge reason why training leaders and developing them form the ground up is needed. A quote for the article "ore concerning is that nearly 60 percent of those surveyed trust a stranger significantly more than they trust their boss," More important the study goes on "58 percent of managers in the study said they hadn’t received any management training when they began managing others." Its imperative that leaders all receive the core skills needed I'm impact change, engagement and trust that lead to hi performance. Putting people in a jobs before they get core skills training on communication and influence is in my opinion malpractice.

Here is another article on leadership that will help us chart our future and create it well.


Heaven knows, just looking at the news headlines these days reminds us how critical leadership is. And I'm not just talking at the political level. Nor am I talking about leadership at the big corporate level. I'm talking about leadership at YOUR level -- no matter where you are in your career or professional life. We are all required to be leaders today in some way, shape or form, whether we work alone or with others.


So what skills do we need to cultivate now to be awesome in the next 20? This article covers them.


Out of the 6 discussed, 4 are related to storytelling:

  1. Questions Not Answers. Effective business storytelling is NOT about 'telling'. It's about evoking stories from others and listening. Then sharing a story in return. That's the exact opposite of what is usually taught however. In order to really leverage story as a leader, it's all about mastering the Art Of The Question. Knowing the right kinds of questions to ask when is one of the secrets to the universe. No kidding. You 'gotta master this one.
  2. Employee Pull. Story is a pull technology, not a push technology. Stories pull people into your world. If you are still relating to storytelling as a push technology -- let me tell you a story so I can push my message to you -- cut it out. Pivot and work with stories as a pull technology so you are working with modern 21st Century skills.
  3. Customer Pull. Ditto #2
  4. Purpose. Got a purpose for your company that creates a positive impact on the planet? In order for Purpose to come alive, to capture the hearts/minds of people, story is your #1 vehicle for getting the job done. Get this under your belt today so you are propelled past others who are late to the game.


There are 2 other skills the author talks about in this post. For me they are long on concepts and short on examples or how-to. But they are good signposts to keep on the radar screen and find more articles research on.


OK -- I'm off to client meetings. While I'm gone doing my story thing, read the insights from this article (of which there are many) so you can start preparing today for your leadership of tomorrow.

Too often these issues go unaddressed.  “Most performance problems aren’t dealt with directly,” says Weintraub. “More often, instead of taking action, the manager will transfer the person somewhere else or let him stay put without doing anything.” This is the wrong approach. Never allow underperformance to fester on your team. It’s rare that these situations resolve themselves. It’ll just get worse. You’ll become more and more irritated and that’s going to show and make the person uncomfortable,” says Manzoni. If you have an issue, take steps toward solving it as soon as possible.

The assumption often is that poor performance is  result of some problem with the performer, but it would be wise to examine the circumstances closely because is it a common bias for people to attribute others failures to them and de-emphasize the situation factors that may be contributing.   Compounding this, we as managers often are biased in seeing our own success as the result of our efforts and failures as a result of happenstance and not our shortcomings— making it still harder for us to see how we might contribute to others' poor performance.

It will not revolve around what I think of as “level 1 integrity” – things like never lying, cheating or stealing. Instead, it will likely challenge your “level 2 integrity” – the kind that has to do with not being divided or misaligned.

Integrity is important. It has multiple meanings beginning with honesty and authenticity. It also has to do with being part of the greater whole. Too often, I found School managers were just that managers and operated as observers. It allowed them to hang on to the idea of cause and effect without thinking of the bigger picture as complex with considerable uncertainty.
