Finding existing practices of open learning recognition

Finding existing practices of open learning recognition | oer ticker | Scoop.it

"The Institute of Learning Innovation at the University of Leicester (partner of the VMPass initiative) is working on the OpenCred study, which aims to identify practices taking place with regard to the recognition of non-formal, open learning, for example a MOOC learner having a certificate or badge recognised by a HE/ Vocational institution or an employer."

Anne-Christin Tannhäuser's insight:

Do you know of any such initiatives or examples anywhere in Europe? Do you know reports, blog posts or other mentions of such recognition on the Web? Are you in touch with someone active in the field?

"The MOOCs for Web Talent Network hosted a webinar on 1 July 2014 on the topic of MOOC Accreditation and Recognition, with representatives from public, private and academic entities. The following is a summary of the discussion, along with the presentation slides of the speakers."

Anne-Christin Tannhäuser's insight:

Agree much to one of the main conclusion of the webinar "MOOCs can actually be a driver of quality in education, since everything is online and visible to all."

MOOC Platform Iversity offers ECTS after passing on-site exam

Launched last October, European MOOC platform iversity.org has now reached nearly 500,000 enrollments in its 28 massive open online courses.

As a pilot run, students were able to obtain ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System) credit points in two courses — "Introduction to Business Studies" and "Marketing" — even if they were not enrolled at one of the institutions offering the course.

The European MOOC platform iversity.org is running a pilot in offering certification to students on the basis of exams, which they sit in various centres in Germany. It's a nice way of widening participation in higher education, but I'm not sure of the validity of exams in testing knowledge, and wonder whether these MOOCs will just end up supporting learners in 'learning for the test'?

Webinar March 5: Badges for Learning - A review of the formative role of badges in two open online courses

Webinar March 5: Badges for Learning - A review of the formative role of badges in two open online courses | oer ticker | Scoop.it

Simon Cross, Open University, UK

The emergence of open online learning courses brings in to sharp relief the viability of existing forms of teacher provided formative and summative assessment. For such courses that carry no charge for participation alternative structures for engaging, motivating and sustaining study need to be sought. Badges or similar such visual public symbols that communicate to others a particular quality, achievement or affiliation possessed by the owner may have a role to play. This session will cover some potential social and psychological roles for badges and then report on the reception and use of badges in two 'massive' open online courses delivered in 2013. This will highlight the varied functions badges performed with particular attention to how they may support and guide learning in a 'formative' capacity during a course and the need for effective pedagogic design and alignment of the course badging strategy. This discussion will draw upon data from end of courses surveys that specifically asked about badges, pre-course surveys, and user comments made during the course such as on Twitter.

The start time will be 07:00 UST/GMT (duration 1 hour approx). See your equivalent local time. http://timeanddate.com/s/2hw9

To join the session please RSVP via email to:

Recognition options for the Openup Ed MOOCs

Recognition options for the Openup Ed MOOCs | oer ticker | Scoop.it

"Successful course completion should be recognised as indicating worthwhile educational achievement.

An important aspect is that the MOOC participant is also provided with real opportunities to participate in higher education. OpenupEd provides separate tracks to engage people in higher education. Next to certificates of participation or a 'badge' (as evidence of task completion), OpenupEd partners increasingly offers MOOCs with the possibility to obtain a formal certificate, i.e. official credits that can count towards obtaining a degree (i.e., ECTS)."

Some Thoughts About OER Policy

Some Thoughts About OER Policy | oer ticker | Scoop.it

"National OER policies determine the framework within which other OER actors can develop. By doing so they form a mighty leverage to shape the OER ecosystem of a country. Though we are still at the beginning, initial achievements are promising. Approaches like the OER policy registry by Creative Commons provide the possibilities to follow and speed up the development. Supportive will also be, that openness and sharing are among the core values of the OER movement. If we manage to obtain this also for the field of policy by sharing our experiences and lessons learned, fast progression should be possible."

Multiple pathways: Blending xMOOCs & cMOOCs - by George Siemens

Susanna Sancassani's curator insight, May 19, 3:36 AM

Is it possible to blend cMOOCs and xMOOCs approach? George Siemens says no, but it is possible to create synergies between different  parallel layers...I think that real paths of real students could be something more complexe than we can imagine: if they are allowed to do it, perhaps they  will mix  the two layers in very personal and different ways in continuous evolution during the learning experience...what do you think about it?

From the early leader/founder of MOOCs

KCenter SKEMA's curator insight, May 20, 12:30 PM

"the difference between xMOOCs & cMOOCs and possible ways to blend them.

The interest in making xMOOCs more like cMOOCs (a few silly folks have called it MOOC 2.0 – haha) seems to be growing. In particular, MOOC providers are adding “social” in the same way that vitamins are added to food, “Now, with beta-carotene”! After much discussion at our designjam, I’ve concluded that cMOOCs and xMOOCs are incompatible. They cannot be blended. Pedagogically and philosophically, they are too different. It’s like trying to make a cat a dog. Entertaining, perhaps, but a fruitless venture."

Atenas, Javiera et al. - Opening teaching landscapes: The importance of quality assurance in the delivery of open educational resources

"Scholars are increasingly being asked to share teaching materials, publish in open access journals, network in social media, and reuse open educational resources (OER). The theoretical benefits of Open Educational Practices (OEP) have become understood in the academic community but thus far, the use of OER has not been rapidly adopted. We aim to understand the challenges academics face with in attempting to adopt OEP, and identify whether these are related to or stem from the functionalities afforded by current repositories of OER (ROER). By understanding what academics and experts consider good practices, we can develop guidelines for quality in the development of ROER. In this article we present the findings from a study surveying academics using OER and experts who develop and/or work with ROER. We conclude by suggesting a framework to enhance the development and quality of ROER."
