Truckie, 19, crushed to death

Truckie, 19, crushed to death | How a strong OHS culture translates into profits | Scoop.it
A 19-YEAR-OLD man was crushed to death by a crane while working on the expansion of Goodna's Westside Christian College.
Jackie Kelly's insight:

This particular incident was close to home.  My husband knew this young man.  Nobody ever deserves to go to work and not come home.  Training, or more to the point, lack there of, played a role in this tragedy.  Failure of an effective safety system to identify hazards and manage risks.  Putting profit before employees safety.

19 years old.  What an absolute waste.  What an absolute disgrace.

The UK
Jackie Kelly's insight:

This is quite a good article about how safety is generally perceived in the work place.  I have found that by approaching safety in a consultative way has been very successful in my current job.  By enabling team members to think creatively and for them selves, they are more willing to own safety on their site.  I have also found that by explaining why certain things have to be done in a certain way - especially when it comes to paper work - they are far more willing to cooperate.  Sounds really simple....but it works.

'Construction flaws' in six Hanford nuclear waste tanks, 13 more may ... | How a strong OHS culture translates into profits | Scoop.it
“Significant construction flaws” have been found in at least 6 of the 28 double shelled radioactive waste storage tanks at the Hanford nuclear waste complex in Washington State, which may lead to additional leaks, documents ...
Jackie Kelly's insight:

Ah yes.  And we all know how "significant construction flaws" can play out if they go undetected.   Safety in design is incredibly important.  All the safety systems in the world are not going to help if the building/machine/factory is not designed and constructed in a way that the quality controlled and designed to minimise safety risks.

Jackie Kelly's insight:

This is really exciting technology!   This presentation is aimed at demonstrating this products ability to increase a projects efficiency and saving money for a client, however the implications for managing safety is quite exciting!!

The ability to thoroughly understand the construction process for a project will enable a project team to identify problems before they happen, model different scenarios and  put in place risk mitigation strategies.   I am going to share this with my boss :)

Improving safety and productivity in coal mines | CSIRO

Improving safety and productivity in coal mines | CSIRO | How a strong OHS culture translates into profits | Scoop.it
CSIRO’s innovative underground longwall automation technology is increasing efficiency and protecting lives.
Jackie Kelly's insight:

Another excellent example of how business and OHS science is coming together to develop solutions that will make work sites safer for people and at the same time, increase productivity and profits.

I would love to see some of these technologies migrate to the civil construction industries where the risk of contact between people and moving plant is an extremely high risk.  It is one that we closely manage in our day to day operations.  I hope I never loose my natural fear of the big pieces of equipment!

Yet another link between safety and productivity. It's nice to know that australia is leading the way when it comes to safety in big mining.

Renee Gibbins's curator insight, July 15, 2014 7:08 AM

The mining industry makes up a lot of Queensland's revenue for building schools, roads and hospitals. Our Department oversees the granting of mining leases from exploration through to production. The CSIRO's steps in making underground mining more safe have helped a lot but there is so much more headway we can make with automated services and other control measures along the way. It is great to know that Australia is leading the way with safety in the mining industry and we can only go from strength to strength.

Many, if not all, trucking stakeholders feared that motor carriers would suffer a decline in productivity yet not benefit from a rise in safety once the current Hours of Service (HOS) regulations went into effect back on July 1.

Lack of training factor in workplace death, inquest told

Lack of training factor in workplace death, inquest told | How a strong OHS culture translates into profits | Scoop.it
Graphic footage showing how a Canberra truck driver died when he was crushed by a crane has been viewed by the ACT Coroner's Court.
Jackie Kelly's insight:

Training is another facet of safety which I am extremely interested in.  I work in civil construction and I strongly believe we have a long way to go in terms of training for workers.  Whilst training is offered, I am not convinced that this is enough to ensure the safety of workers and in particular young workers.  I have a suspicion that training has become another "tick a box" exercise that is used to achieve compliance.  And we will know that compliance does not necessarily equal quality.

The profit motive and plain ignorance are the main reasons why such a culture is largely non-existent in the workplace.
Jackie Kelly's insight:

This is an article from a Singapore news paper.  Love the blunt language - no beating around the bush and no worrying about offending some big company.  At first I thought, wow Singapore has such a long way to go with their H&S......however when we look at our H&S stats here in QLD, we are not really performing all that well either.

Has anyone ever seen this in their work place?  I certainly have not.  But, I am suspecting that this sort of technology is only ever seen by engineers with little or no involvement with other departments such as OH&S.
