A paramedic who was killed during a cliff rescue on the NSW south coast was inadvertently dragged off a cliff ledge by a rescue helicopter that was meant to winch him and his patient to safety, a report into the accident has found.

This article highlights the dangers faced by specialised paramedic's who risk their lives to save others. In this case the paramedic died due to miscommunication with his crew.The other issue highlighted in this article is the fact that as a specialised paramedic he was not covered with life insurance because of the dangers of his job. The few life insurance and income protections available were prohibitively expensive.

The Victorian government plans to scrap driver training for graduate paramedic which will result in paramedics having to complete a driving course before employment. The week long course provided paramedics with the appropriate training and skills to be able to drive safely under lights and sirens, at speed, in emergency situations. By removing the appropriate training, they are putting not only the paramedics in danger but also the patients and other road users.

This research paper collected data on work related injuries and fatality rates among US paramedics and EMS workers. There were more than 21,749 reported cases, 21, 690 involved non-fatal injuries or illness. The most common of these were transportation related injuries- back injuries, sprains and strains. Overexertion was also common, while assaults were reported with a total of 530 cases.

Most of these non-fatal injuries are preventable with the right precautions, training and equipment.
