Road Safety Campaign in NZ

I

Robyn Tigerbite Dent's insight:

I love ad campaigns that take people out of their comfort zones and get the message of safety across in a different way. This particular campaign only cost $950 and made national news in New Zealand. Road safety is something I am passionate as it can have such a devastating effect on a family. I lost my mother in a road accident when I was six, so this ad hit home hard.

Nice 'making of' film for an interesting road safety campaign

Robyn Tigerbite Dent's insight:

I would like to be able to utilise my artistic talent in a way such as this, incorporating it into safety awareness. It must have been so satisfying to see the finished product for this road accident campaign. Brilliant portrayal of  "We all play a part in road safety"!

Electronic Cigarettes in Work |

Electronic Cigarettes in Work | | Quest 1 - Tigerbite's OHS journey: Past, current & future | Scoop.it

It has been over a decade since most of the Western World banned cigarette smoking in the work place. Gone are the days of sitting at your desk and puffing away at a report to calm the stress of getting a report completed in time for a tight deadline.  Treks down to elevator and out onto the sidewalk replaced this. But the rise of electronic cigarettes has thrown this all out the window, and now consideration of vaping is on the agenda of health and safety officers and human resource departments across the land.

Robyn Tigerbite Dent's insight:

Electronic cigarettes are a hot topic in my workplace at the moment. Legislation states it is an offence to smoke a lit cigarette in a taxi and there is a penalty infringement notice imposed on offenders. However, is an electronic cigarette considered a cigarette? The current legislation is not very clear and the matter has not been tested in court. Nicotine is carcinogenic and these electronic cigarettes may be just as toxic to human health. It seems to be another case of where legislation hasn't been able to keep up with technology and has left gaps of uncertainty. I believe to smoke these cigarettes in a workplace when the effects on health are unclear is irresponsible and leaves employers open to law suits in the future.

Video: Injuries and Safety in Roller Derby

Roller girl Emma Dyduch talks about her most serious injury yet and shares the safety precautions players take to reduce the risks.
Robyn Tigerbite Dent's insight:

Safety is paramount in this full contact sport. I wear a helmet, mouth guard, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads, knee gaskets, shin guards and ankle braces. I have had bruises, completely ruptured my Post Cruciate Ligament in my knee and have fractured my tailbone twice. I consider myself one of the lucky ones. I would be interested in doing a study on the types of injuries sustained by derby girls and the long term impacts of these on a derby girls life. I hope to be healthy enough to still be skating in five years time.

Can Social Media Help Direct Mental Health Aid? - NBC News | Quest 1 - Tigerbite's OHS journey: Past, current & future | Scoop.it

Robyn Tigerbite Dent's insight:

Monitoring of social media sites for signs of distress and providing help to those who need it. If it works, it is a great concept. I am a little wary of the word 'monitoring'. Recently, employees working on an island were disciplined for their Facebook posts about an incident that made national news. Management chose to punish those that commented on the matter. These posts may have been a cry for help.

Workplace bullying

Miriam Corowa speaks with Linda Scott from Safety Consultants Australia about the impact that workplace bullying can have on the individual.
Robyn Tigerbite Dent's insight:

It is totally disgraceful that Australian workplaces are amongst the worst in the world for bullying and that this problem costs 8 billion dollars a year. "Let's stamp out bullying". I agree that this is not necessarily the best catch phrase for a campaign to deal with this problem.

Temika Tanzer's curator insight, March 13, 2014 2:11 AM

In 2015, after nearly 100 years in modern accident prevention, i'd like to someday understand why there is still a steady increase in mine deaths. With eight people being killed in Australian mining operations in the last seven months, is it not obvious the current safety procedures in place aren't effectively working? Where will these statistics end up in five or ten years time?  Instead of safety being seen as a "hassle" and "effort" to employees, OHS officers should be doing everything they can to make it the uttermost importance, and employees and employers should be living and breathing safety in everything they do. After all, it is a matter of life and death, and something I am strongly passionate about.

Robyn Tigerbite Dent's insight:

I believe that we are currently only seeing the tip of the iceberg in mental health issues in the mining industry and that this is going to be a huge problem in the future. I think there needs to be more acceptance of this problem and the stigma of mental health needs to be reduced.

Knowedge, Awareness, Communication and Support. These are just 4 avenues that I use in providing assistance and awareness for the workers at site. This approach is useful for any health or safety topic that is important to the workforce, and one that I have found is effective.

Nick Maidment's OHS Quest's curator insight, June 11, 2014 6:08 AM

Mental health is one of the biggest contributors to deaths in high risk industries, its about time we invested into the invisible health aspects of health and safety.
