Quest 4 Mission 1

Lokking through the scoop submissions for Quest 1 and i noticed the variety of field of work that we all come from and the variety of everyday risk that are imposed on those people , the one scoop that stood out for me is this one that discusses about violence against paramedics , the the normal situation the puplic wouldnt consider injuring the people that are helping them , it must be remebere that people in shock or under the influence of drugs mat not see things as normal and may think the paramedics are going to harm , this happens to be one of the risks that these wonderful people are faced with everyday.

Paramedics and the effects of shift work on sleep: a literature review -- Sofianopoulos et al. 29 (2): 152 -- Emergency Medicine Journal

Paramedics and the effects of shift work on sleep: a literature review -- Sofianopoulos et al. 29 (2): 152 -- Emergency Medicine Journal | Trauma Junkie: OHS Quest 1 | Scoop.it
Breeanne Watson's insight:

This will always be a topic for discussion. Ultimately, it doesn't matter how many investigations are undertaken into the health implications of shift work, there will still always be a need for shift work. Finding a happy medium that allows shift workers to not suffer from lack of sleep while also maintaining safety for the public with enough staff will always be a challenge.

Breeanne Watson's insight:

Very interesting to see a comparision on the most common injuries to Paramedics. Most are injuries that can occur acutely or as general strain after years in the field.

So lets just say we should all listen, pay attention and understand our driver training properly before we get out on the roads behind the wheel. One should also hope that we learnt from our OH&S subjects and put the information retained into use. We are supposed to be attending to a critical patient, not becoming the critical patient or creating more critical patients! These clips just have health and safety issues written all over them.

Breeanne Watson's insight:

Everyone deals with confronting scenes differently. What will affect one paramedic may not affect another, and something that sparks little emotion in one may be enough to break another. Correct means of discussion and counselling need to be available to all paramedics at all times.

A notable point made by Rick Murray was about changing the safety culture within EMS. He stated that he himself was guilty of thinking that just because an unsafe practice didn't result in a negative/unsafe outcome, does NOT mean it becomes a safe practice. He implied that generally speaking EMS is guilty of believing that if they "did it once before and got away with it, the same should happen again".

Paramedics will get power to refuse to take people to hospital in a bid to crack down on ambulances being used as taxis

Paramedics will get power to refuse to take people to hospital in a bid to crack down on ambulances being used as taxis | Trauma Junkie: OHS Quest 1 | Scoop.it
PARAMEDICS will have the power to refuse to take people to hospital in a bid to crack down on ambulances being used as taxis.
Breeanne Watson's insight:

This is a fantastic decision! Not only will it crack down on Ambulances being used inappropriately, but will also support hospitals in lowering waiting times, etc. One must ask themselves though, will it create a danger to paramedics? Will patients who are adamant about being transport (regardless of whether it's needed) turn against paramedics who refuse to take them? I fully support the move, but it will be interesting to see the outcome.

Having done placement as a paramedic student, 12 hour shifts coud call for alot more coffee than what I would usually take. At times I would find myself dosing off on our way to a job. Doing shift work definately robs you off sleep!
