This year though, scientists who count the seal population every five years say the seals have moved further out from their usual birthing grounds due to poor ice conditions in the Gulf.

A new fungal disease brought in from Asia is threatening European salamanders. Once the amphibians become infected, they die within a brief period of time, report biologists. Because saving the infected populations is still not possible, Switzerland has preventively imposed an import ban for salamanders and newts.

In Canada, the wolf was extirpated from the Atlantic Provinces by the 1900s, becoming extinct in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick by 1870 and in Newfoundland by 1911. Wolves have been pushed out of the southern portion of Quebec and Ontario. Prairie or “buffalo wolves” became extinct in the 19th century. Urbanization is also creating conflicts among people and this predator in  parts of southern British Columbia.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) has released its annual wolf report, as well as a draft the revised Wolf Conservation and Management Plan.  “According to this report, 2016 was a bad year for wolves in Oregon,” said Conservation Director Steve Pedery. “Population growth stalled, and the number of breeding pairs and packs declined. This raises troubling questions about ODFW’s continuing drive to pursue hunting and trapping.”
