Coral Reef Formation

Smithsonian

Laura Cameron's insight:

Summary: Covers formation/how the work. See section on conservation complete with threats. “with perhaps one quarter of all ocean species ... providing food, protection of shorelines, jobs based on tourism, and even medicines.” Will be used mainly for species information.

National Geographic

National Geographic provides free maps, photos, videos and daily news stories, as well as articles and features about animals, the environment, cultures, history, world music, and travel.
Laura Cameron's insight:

Summary: There are at least 2 relevant articles for the GBR. One discusses dumping sand from Australia and the other talks about dumping bombs during military exercises. I will use these for the subtopic Threat of Pollution.

Genotypes/Environment

BMC Genetics

Laura Cameron's insight:

Summary:

Study of environmental stress response in coral genes has resulted in possiblities for re-growing and restoration among reefs. Correlations between temperature and water clarity were seen with the success of the allele's frequency. This information will be incorporated into my sub-section Restoration.

Long Recovery For Barrier Reef

New York Times

Laura Cameron's insight:

Summary: Results of an oil tanker that ran aground and leaked. The reef was damaged for miles and may take 20 yrs to recover. This will be referenced in subtopic Threats, pollution/accidents.

The Great Barrier Reef: History, Science, Heritage

James and Margarita Bowen

Laura Cameron's insight:

Summary: This is a book by James and Margarita Bowen that discusses the origin of, history of, and the ‘Save the Reef’ campaign of the 1960s. Coral reefs are early warning indicators of global imbalance. This material should help with relating the GBR to topics in oceanography as it discusses plate techtonics.

NOAA's National Ocean Service

NOAA's National Ocean Service | Oceanography - Great Barrier Reef | Scoop.it
In the U.S., where over half of us live along the coast and more than 78 percent of our overseas trade by volume comes and goes along our marine highways, the health of our coasts is intricately connected to the health of our nation's economy. The National Ocean Service (NOS) translates science, tools, and services into action, to address threats to coastal areas such as climate change, population growth, port congestion, and contaminants in the environment, all working towards healthy coasts and healthy economies.
Laura Cameron's insight:

Summary: This site gives general information on reefs and the GBR. I will use it in my species description subsection.

Sea-Surface Temperature Anomalies

Conservation Biology

Laura Cameron's insight:

Summary:

25 yrs of sst data is analyzed to determine high-temp anomalies. In some regions of the GBR, sst has increased quite a bit. This data can be used to document changes over time, and to determine if current and past conservation efforts have been successful. This will go under my subtopics Conservation and/or Climate Change.
