A 27-year-old man, who posted a video clip of him raping a 19-year-old woman on Facebook whom was described by the Court as a “fearful cornered animal being mercilessly assaulted,” has been jailed for 11 years.

 

The decision delivered by his Honour Justice Vui Clarence Nelson prohibits the publication of details that could lead to the identification of the victim.

SOLOMON Telekom Company Limited is now a 100-percent locally owned company.

 

 This came following the signing ceremony to mark the transfer of 32.58 percent shares held by Cable and Wireless Company (CWC) to Solomon Islands National Provident Fund (SINPF) on Wednesday in Honiara.

SINPF paid off the shares from CWC for a total of SBD$100 million (US16.5m)

RAROTONGA, Cook Islands (Cook Islands News, Sept. 18, 2014) – Web surfers in far away cities will soon get a chance to navigate the underwater reef environment around Rarotonga, along with a chance to view incredible footage of some gigantic whales.

 

As part of Catlin Seaview Survey, two unique cameras were recently deployed in the Cook Islands to capture images of Rarotonga’s reefs, and ended up capturing photos of whales visiting the island as they continue their migratory journey.

 

The footage is described as the first 360 degree panoramic imagery of whales.

POST COURIER - Telikom PNG Limited and Bmobile will roll out a $US100 million 3G/4G next generation mobile phone network from April next year.

 

Telikom PNG CEO Michael Donnelly said the strategic partnership between Bmobile and the Vodafone UK Group would be beneficial to Telikom and Bmobile.

Call to prioritise internet access and speed - Solomon Star

A campaign to promote improved and more affordable access to the internet in the Pacific has put its case to governments across the region.

Founder of Connect the Blue Continent, Chris Sampson, was a delegate to the recent annual general meeting in Marshall Islands of the Association of Pacific Island Legislatures. 
 
He made a plea for Pacific island governments to prioritise internet infrastructure, systems and skills development.
 
“The theme was transportation and communications so there was quite a lot of discussion on the need to prioritise affordable internet access for the region and how we might go about doing that,” Sampson said.

NPCP: Website to connect industry stakeholders | The National

HE National Petroleum Company Papua New Guinea (NPCP) yesterday launched its website to enable connection with its stakeholders and others in the hydrocarbon industry. It is the third largest shareholder in this world class liquefied natural gas (LNG) project with over 16.5 percent equity, behind ExxonMobil (33.2%) and Oil Search (29%).


The website www.npcp.com went live yesterday.


NPCP chairman Frank Kramer said the website would enable connection with their ultimate shareholders, citizens as well as commercial partners, investors and others in the industry.

NUKU‘ALOFA, Tonga (Matangi Tonga, August 8, 2014) – HM King Tupou VI officially launched the UCall Mobile Network for Niuafo‘ou on August 7 at a ceremony held at ‘Esia, Niuafo‘ou.

 

Rizvi Jurangpathy, acting Chief Executive Officer of the Tonga Communication Corporation (TCC) said that the mobile service now covered all of Tonga’s small remote islands.

 

The Niuafo’ou mobile network services are an addition to the TCC fixed lines already there. TCC, a state owned company, is the only communications service provider for the remote island groups in the Kingdom, including Niuafo‘ou, Niuatoputapu, Nomuka and Ha‘afeva.

At the queen's crowning ceremony, chief financial officer Farid Mohammed said the telecommunications company's 3G+ network now covered Ba as well.

Kacific to bring fast broadband to Kiribati's most remote islands

People on all of the 33 islands and atolls of Kiribati will be able to enjoy high speed broadband services from 2017, thanks to an agreement their government signed today with Kacific Broadband Satellites.

 

Under the multi-million dollar five year services agreement, Kacific will provide the islands with 150 Mbps of bandwidth increasing to 200 Mbps over the term of the contract. Kiribati will be able to increase bandwidth in bursts of up to 50 percent on demand.

With a population of 100,000 people across 3.5 million square kilometres of islands and ocean, Kiribati is the 18th largest nation in the world in terms of its exclusive economic zone, with one of the most disseminated populations on the planet.

Electronic reporting trial for tuna fishery will begin after the Ministry of Marine Resources (MMR) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) formalise a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

 

Under the MOU, an e-reporting officer will be employed at the Cook Islands Fisheries Field Office (CIFFO) in Pago Pago, American Samoa, to begin the trials with one of the Cook Islands-flagged longline fishing fleets. 

 

E-reporting is the electronic recording of data in the field by vessel captains, crews and fisheries officers.

Anyone found in breach of tomorrow’s media blackout period faces a possible fine of up to $50,000 or 10 years in prison – or both.


But unlike previous elections, for the first time this blackout period also includes anything on social media as well.

 

The only exception will be for major announcements by the Elections Office itself.

BSP launches new mobile banking app

 Bank South Pacific yesterday launched its Mobile Banking Application (App) – the bank’s newest way of offering banking solutions for its customers.


The product was launched in Port Moresby with customers who lined up to sign up for the product.


BSP Mobile Banking App, available on Google Play Store, Windows App and App Stores, is another avenue for BSP customers to do their banking.  


Deputy general manager retail Banking Kili Tambua said as more Papua New Guineans became knowledgeable, BSP had to change its approaches in the way it offered services to its customers.

A locally owned bungalow in Vao, Malekula, that normally gets a maximum of 9 tourists per year has experience a tremendous hike in a year now receiving at least 94 guests each year.

 

Tamtam Bungalow was getting a maximum of 9 guests since its establishment until 2011 when the it was introduced to the internet booking by the Tourism Department through the provincial tourism website, the malampa.travel.

 

One year later in 2012, the number of visiting guests increases to 94 that year and the trend has continued.
