As part of the last meeting of the Convention on International Trade of Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Cites), held this week in Bangkok (Thailand), the national government banned fishing for oceanic whitetip shark (Carcharhinus longimanus) in Brazilian waters. One strategy to help protect and research sharks is ecotourism. A recent study around Costa Rica’s Cocos Island, estimated the value of a Hammerhead shark at US $1.6 million each for tourism purposes, compared to less than $200 it could sell for. A 2011 study by the Australian Institute of Marine Science had an even bigger difference, estimating a lifetime value of nearly US $2 million dollars for a Reef shark in Palau vs. only $108 for it’s sale in a fish market. Governments are starting to take notice of this economic value; countries including Australia, Palau, as well as the Cook Islands have recently created large marine areas to protect sharks and other ocean life.

When most people hear the words “shark” and “tourism” in the same sentence, the first thing they’re likely to think of is how to avoid them. Unfortunately, these people are missing an opportunity to witness and learn about one of nature’s truly astounding creatures. While shark attacks are real and many movies and media outlets capitalize on this fear, there are ways to avoid danger and have a great experience while contributing to shark conservation. “Oceanic whitetips frequently take bait meant for other species like tuna and swordfish,” co-author Demian Chapman, an assistant director of science at the Institute for Ocean Conservation at Stony Brook University, told BBC News. “Fisherman will take all of these sharks that were incidentally hooked and they will take their fins, and that is fatal to the shark.”
“If we want to continue to see these animals in our oceans, fishing nations will have to work together to protect this species, and monitoring of trade and enforcement measures will need to be coordinated on an international level,” he added.
In future studies, the marine biologists say they will focus on finding out the reason behind the sharks’ migrations. By using ultrasound scanners and hormone testing, they plan to see if the pattern is related to the animal’s two-year reproductive cycle. Delete the scoop?
