ased on the scientific advice by the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) and with the active support of the EU, NASCO decided to maintain the prohibition of mixed-stock fisheries off the coast of Greenland and Faroe Islands. No commercial fishing will take place there from 2012 to 2014 – heralding the first time that NASCO has adopted multi-annual conservation measures.

Alaska's Congressional delegation has introduced legislation calling for the U.S. Department of Commerce to set catch limits for Alaska Native whaling communities if the International Whaling Commission fails to act on a request for a six-year extension of current quotas.

The current limits are set to expire at the end of the year.
