#OWS Rolling Jubilee Liberates Another Soul From a Medical Debthttp://bit.ly/1alBb3k | occupy wall street | Scoop.it
Jerry Ashton's insight:

So what is Rolling Jubilee?

The group is an outfit launched just a year ago by former Occupy Wall Street members now grouped under the nationwide Strike Debt collective.

“Together we can liberate debtors at random through a campaign of mutual support, good will and collective refusal,” it says on its website, rollingjubilee.org.

The idea? Buy up the personal debt of those who are struggling to fulfill their basic needs, like health care or housing.

For the New York-based group’s first anniversary, it announced this month that in one fell swoop it had bought up the equivalent of nearly $13.5 million in medical debt that some 2,693 people owed to hospitals and medical offices.

The group purchased the debt for only $400,000 — mainly paid for by small donations made to the organization over the Internet.

Reflecting on Rescuing Stranded Starfish and Abolishing Medical Debt

Reflecting on Rescuing Stranded Starfish and Abolishing Medical Debt | occupy wall street | Scoop.it
What was it like to open up a letter announcing that the burden of a large medical debt had been taken away?
Jerry Ashton's insight:

Some 2,692 people (owing an aggregate of $13,500,000 in medical debt across 45 states and Puerto Rico) received this letter and its greeting:

"We are writing you with good news. The Rolling Jubilee fund, a non-profit organization, has purchased (the debt owed). The mission of this project is to buy and abolish personal debt, as it is our belief that no one should have to go into debt for the basic things in our lives such as healthcare, housing and education."

The letter continues... "You are no longer under any obligation to settle this account with the original creditor, the bill collector, or anyone else... If you have any further questions or you are willing to share your story please contact us. We believe more people need to know about the injustice of medical debt and hope to hear from you."

Put THAT in your pipe and smoke it, Bill Collector.
