Islam Times - Hamas: Egypt should ease restrictions on Rafah border crossing

Islam Times - Hamas: Egypt should ease restrictions on Rafah border crossing | Occupied Palestine | Scoop.it
Islam Times - Hamas movement has called on newly elected Egyptian President Mohammad Morsi to end the Gaza blockade permanently by reopening the Rafah crossing, Gaza’s only gate to the outside world bypassing Israel.

Hamas is also demanding that the crossing be used for commerce in order to bypass Israeli crossings and end dependency on Israeli ports.

Ever since the election of President Morsi, the number of people allowed to leave Gaza through the Rafah crossing located at the southern tip of the Gaza Strip has doubled.

Up to fifteen hundred people cross it on almost a daily basis. However, despite the improvements, the situation for travelers is still difficult.

People stay for long hours under the searing sun and the dusty desert wind try to exit the blockaded coastal enclave. Children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses are the most affected.

Former dictator Hosni Mubarak backed the Israeli blockage of Gaza by maintaining the Rafah crossing closed at all times. And it was only after the attack on the Turkish Mavi Marmara ship in May of 2010, where nine Turkish activists were killed by Israeli naval forces, that his regime partially eased restrictions.

For the time being, the Rafah terminal operates only nine hours a day six days a week.

Former Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak played into the hands of Israel by maintaining the Rafah crossing closed most of the time. Now Gazans say they are pinning their hope on Egyptian President Mohammad Morsi to keep it open for good.

2 Palestinian workers killed in Israel, Ramallah | Occupied Palestine | Scoop.it

QALQILIYA (Ma’an) -- Two Palestinian workers were killed in separate work accidents in Israel and the West Bank on Tuesday, locals said.

Faris Abed Faris, 21, from Azzun al-Atma village near Qalqiliya, died while working for an Israeli construction company in central Israeli city Petah Tikva, his associates said.

He was taken to an Israeli hospital but pronounced dead on arrival, they said, adding that Israeli police have opened an investigation.

In Ramallah, Muhannad Natsheh, 21, was also killed on Tuesday when he fell from the sixth floor of a building he was constructing.

Labor bureau director Muhammad Qabha said after visiting the site that it failed to provide a safe working environment. He warned the PA bureau would close any work site that does not meet the requirements of public safety in the Palestinian Labor Law.

Local official: 8 years on, wall keeps farmers from land | Maan News Agency

Local official: 8 years on, wall keeps farmers from land | Maan News Agency | Occupied Palestine | Scoop.it
QALQILIYA (Ma’an) -- A local official said Monday that more than 3,000 Palestinians have lost land behind Israel's separation wall in the northern West Bank town of Qalqiliya, in remarks on the eighth anniversary of the International Court of Justice's ruling its route is illegal.

PA official monitoring the wall in Qalqiliya Mohammed Abu Sheikh said Israel circumvented the ruling by following Israeli court decisions to annex land behind the wall.

Residents who lost land can no longer farm their fields without permission, he said.

Local farmer Yousef Al-Raee told Ma'an his agricultural livelihood is threatened every season as the Israeli authorities delay issuing permits to him and his family in order to tend land behind the wall.

Arafat's widow to bring case in France over death | Maan News Agency

Arafat's widow to bring case in France over death | Maan News Agency | Occupied Palestine | Scoop.it

PARIS (Reuters) -- Yasser Arafat's widow will launch a court case in France into the unexplained death of the iconic Palestinian leader eight years ago after a media report suggested he may have been poisoned, her lawyer said on Tuesday.

Allegations of foul play have long surrounded Arafat's demise in November 2004 after French doctors who treated him in his final days said they could not establish the cause of death.

The controversy was reignited by an Al Jazeera expose last week in which the Swiss Radiophysics Institute said it found "surprisingly" high levels of polonium-210 on Arafat's clothing - the same substance used to kill former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006.

The Swiss institute said, however, that the symptoms described in the Palestinian president's medical reports were not consistent with the radioactive agent.

"Madame Arafat hopes that the authorities will be able to establish the exact circumstances of her husband's death and uncover the truth, so that justice can be done," lawyer Pierre-Olivier Sud said in a statement.

The exact nature of the legal complaint by Arafat's 48-year-old widow, Suha, is yet to be determined but it is expected to be presented before the end of this month, the lawyer said.

It would be presented against a person or persons unknown, the lawyer said in a statement.

The Palestinian Authority agreed last week to a request from Suha Arafat - who lives in Malta and France - to exhume her husband's body from a limestone mausoleum in the West Bank city of Ramallah for an autopsy.

"I want the world to know the truth about the assassination of Yasser Arafat," Suha Arafat told Al Jazeera, without making any direct accusations, but noting that both Israel and the United States regarded him as an obstacle to peace.

Allegations of foul play - and of Palestinian involvement in it - have long marked factional fighting among Palestinians.

The latest revelation coincides with renewed tensions within Arafat's Fatah movement, now headed by his successor President Mahmoud Abbas, and between Fatah and Hamas, the Islamist movement which controls the Gaza Strip

Tunisia has called for a ministerial meeting of the Arab League to meet to discuss Arafat's death.

Last weekend, Abbas met French President Francois Hollande and asked him to help form an international investigative committee through the UN Security Council, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat told Al Jazeera.

Confined by Israel to his West Bank headquarters in Ramallah for three years after a Palestinian uprising erupted, an ailing Arafat collapsed in October 2004.

Looking weak and thin - and telling aides "God willing, I will be back" - he was airlifted to a military hospital in France, where he slipped into a coma and died on Nov. 11, 2004.

Rumors circulated that he had died from anything from stomach cancer to poisoning to AIDS. French officials, citing privacy laws, refused to give details of the nature of his illness.

Witnesses: Israeli military vehicles fire on south Gaza | Maan News Agency

Witnesses: Israeli military vehicles fire on south Gaza | Maan News Agency | Occupied Palestine | Scoop.it

GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Israeli military vehicles entered the southern Gaza Strip on Tuesday morning, firing gunshots, locals said.

No injuries were reported.

Eyewitnesses told Ma'an ten vehicles escorted bulldozers to level Palestinian land near the village of Al-Qarara, north of Khan Younis. Gunshots were fired in several directions, they said.

Separately, witnesses said Israeli troops stationed east of Gaza City’s al-Shujaiyya neighborhood opened fire toward Palestinian homes early Tuesday, without causing injuries.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said forces carried out routine activity near Al-Qarara, and she was not aware of any incident near Gaza City.

Overnight, Israeli fighter jets bombarded sites in Rafah and Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip, without causing injuries.

An Israeli military statement said the forces targeted "two Hamas terror activity sites," confirming direct hits.

It said the airstrikes were in response to gunfire from Gaza on Monday into an Israeli residential kibbutz, Yad Mordechai, near the border.
