What Medications are Effective in OCD? | Portland Psychotherapy

What Medications are Effective in OCD? | Portland Psychotherapy | Obsessive Compulsive Disorder | Scoop.it
In previous posts, I've written about how cognitive behavioral treatment (specifically, CBT with exposure and response prevention) has been shown to be much more effective in treating obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) than medication.
Tiffany Fields's insight:

This is a short article in which discusses the potential benefits of medication managment when trying to treat OCD symptoms. I believe that some form of medication treatment is esstential to help relieve some of the stress and depression that can develop throughout the span of OCD. This is a treatment technique that needs to be examined more so with the combination of other therapy treatments.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) | Obsessive Compulsive Disorder | Scoop.it
People with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) suffer intensely from recurrent unwanted thoughts (obsessions) or rituals (compulsions), which they feel they cannot control.
Tiffany Fields's insight:

I feel as though there are many different forms of information on OCD this article provides direct information from the mental health america association.  While I have been searching for relevant information in order to create a general understand of how OCD affects the lives of those living with the disorder. I believe it can be esstential to learn more from relevant source then that of basic articales. Even more so the reasoning  behind many treatments can be justified the article emphaizes on exposure and response prevention. This can be an effective treatment for those living with OCD and has been a positive change for many individuals.

OCD in children: 'A darkness has overtaken me'

OCD in children: 'A darkness has overtaken me' | Obsessive Compulsive Disorder | Scoop.it
Alissa Welker would switch the lights on, off, on, off, on, off -- however many times it took to feel "right." When she was 9, she'd spend the equivalent of an adult workday doing these kinds of rituals.
Tiffany Fields's insight:

The child's point of view living with OCD is something that isn't advertised or given the awareness that it should be. The determinations of growing up with a disorder that so many individuals are ashamed of or feel left out because others don't fully understand the disorder is something that needs to changes overtime. Allowing for the children to see their OCD not as a monster but as an interesting aspect of themselves.

Personal Stories - Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) | Anxiety and Depression Association of America, ADAA

Personal Stories - Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) | Anxiety and Depression Association of America, ADAA | Obsessive Compulsive Disorder | Scoop.it
Tiffany Fields's insight:

I have found personal stories of what it is life to be living with OCD a very important part of understanding the disorder as a whole. There are numerous studies conducted in order to understand the disorder from a scientific aspect. However in order to allow for a complete emphasis on how an individual actually lives with the disorder reading and talking to an individual in the mist of living with OCD is much more essential because it develops a personal understanding rather than reading different studies.

Tiffany Fields's insight:

I believe that it can provide individuals with a basic idea of how to control their compulsions in a way that can be manageable or even relieving to those who are trying to understand their disorder. The most essential piece to this article is to recognize the notion of taking care of oneself over everything else; to know the personal triggers for compulsions, having an outlet if needed, having others to talk to or generally vent and an understanding close friend/family member can make one not seem so different.

Kandis Y's curator insight, January 19, 2014 3:55 PM

This article gave me some ideas about how to help those suffering from OCD.  Like most of the other articles on OCD, it stresses the importance of CBT for treatment.  However, it also discusses actual self-help tips that the client can do to take control over the disorder.  And, there are suggestions for family members and friends that can help them support their loved ones suffering from OCD.  I never would have thought about the suggestions mentioned here (e.g. recording your obsessions and listening to them later, changing your diet and exercise habits, and finding the humor in the behaviors - only if the one suffering finds the humor, too).  This was really helpful and practical!

The mental and emotional aspects of living with OCD can be overwhelming to an individual starting to develop an understanding of their disorder.
