Employment: A dirty little secret and more graphs | 2011-05-06

by CalculatedRisk on 5/06/2011 01:25:00 PM

First, anyone who adds (or subtracts) the Not Seasonally Adjusted (NSA) birth/death model numbers from the headline SA payroll employment is clueless. Someone sent me this "analysis" today: "... you exclude the 62K from McDonalds hirings, and 175K from the Birth Death Adjustment, and end up with.... +7K jobs". That is complete nonsense. The key issue with the birth/death model is it misses turning points; otherwise it is an important part of the monthly estimate.

Second, I was reminded of a "dirty little secret" when I read Paul Krugman's column this morning. Krugman wrote about how the "D.C. economic discourse is saturated with fear" of "invisible monsters", but that no one seems to care about the very real plight of the millions of unemployed.

Actually it really isn't much of a secret that Wall Street and corporate America like the unemployment rate to be a little high. But it is "dirty" in the sense that it is unspoken. Higher unemployment keeps wage growth down, and helps with margins and earnings - and higher unemployment also keeps the Fed on the sidelines. Yes, corporations like to see job growth, so people have enough confidence to spend (and they can have a few more customers). And they definitely don't want to see Depression era unemployment - but a slowly declining unemployment rate (even at 9%) with some job growth is considered OK.

I just want to be clear: I don't think 9% unemployment is OK. It is pretty $%^# far from OK. (think Marsellus Wallace in "Pulp Fiction" for my non-G rated reaction). I'm amazed that unemployment isn't the key topic in D.C., but the unemployed don't make political contributions. (Ok, enough rant).

Here are a few more graphs based on the employment report ...

She was chosen a year prior to her death, fed a ritualistic diet for an approximate twelve months to make her gain weight, then was drugged and left on the shrine at Volcano Llullaillaco, where she was left to die of exposure. For five hundred years, her body had been preserved at 82 ft. She is considered to be the best preserved Andean mummy ever uncovered.

Christine Lagarde a Favorite to Lead I.M.F. | oAnth-miscellaneous | Scoop.it
Christine Lagarde’s reputation for frank talk is helping to make her the leading candidate to replace Dominique Strauss-Kahn as head of the I.M.F.

Her straight talk has helped burnish Ms. Lagarde’s reputation as one of Europe’s most influential ambassadors in the world of international finance.

If she gets the post, Ms. Lagarde would be the first woman to run the I.M.F. — or any large international financial institution, for that matter. But Mr. Rogoff indicated gender was only part of her appeal.

“She is enormously impressive, politically astute and a strong personality,” he said. “At finance meetings all over the world, she is treated practically like a rock star.”

... seeing as I'm the only one who noticed, I have a feeling they have little reason to re-add the open protocol back into their interface. Personally, I think it's a shame, as it makes it so only developers like myself can code anything to extract that data - the average user has no way of pulling that data out of Twitter or Facebook.

It seems in 2011 and the era of Facebook and Twitter we've completely lost any care for open standards. Maybe it's not just RSS that is dying - it's the entire premise of open standards that is dying, and I think that's really sad, and really bad for not just developers, but users in general.

Academic Uses of Social Media: Exploring 21st Century Communications

May 3, 2011
11:45 am - 3:00 pm

Social media — from blogs to wikis to tweets — have become academic media, new means by which scholars communicate, collaborate, and teach. Join us for lunch to hear from a distinguished faculty panel, moderated by John Palfrey, about how they are adopting and adapting to new communication and networking tools, following a keynote by social media thought leader danah boyd. After the presentations, attendees can opt to stay for a practicum on Harvard’s social media practices and resources. (Lunch will be provided).

Many young adults have incorporated social media into their daily practices, both academically and personally. They use these tools to connect, collaborate, communicate and create. In this talk, danah boyd — Social Media Researcher at Microsoft Research New England and affiliate of the Harvard University's Berkman Center for Internet and Society — examines the different social media practices common among young adults, clarifying both the cultural logic behind these everyday practices, and the role of social media in academia.

She is introduced by Judy Singer, Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Development and Diversity at Harvard University, and John Palfrey, Faculty co-director of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society.

Paul Krugman: The Unwisdom of Elites - Offene Ablage: nothing to hide

Paul Krugman: The Unwisdom of Elites - Offene Ablage: nothing to hide | oAnth-miscellaneous | Scoop.it
May 9 2011

[Imported from economistsview.typepad.com]

Paul Krugman: The Unwisdom of Elites

The "self-appointed wise men, officials, and pundits in good standing" are trying to shift the blame for the troubles we are having;

The Unwisdom of Elites, by Paul Krugman, Commentary, NYTimes: The past three years have been a disaster for most Western economies. ... How did it all go so wrong?

Well, what I’ve been hearing with growing frequency from members of the policy elite — self-appointed wise men, officials, and pundits in good standing — is the claim that it’s mostly the public’s fault. The idea is that we got into this mess because voters wanted something for nothing, and weak-minded politicians catered to the electorate’s foolishness.

So this seems like a good time to point out that this blame-the-public view isn’t just self-serving, it’s dead wrong.

The fact is that what we’re experiencing right now is a top-down disaster. The policies that got us into this mess weren’t responses to public demand. They were, with few exceptions, policies championed by small groups of influential people — in many cases, the same people now lecturing the rest of us on the need to get serious. ...

Let me focus mainly on what happened in the United States... These days Americans get constant lectures about the need to reduce the budget deficit. ... What happened to the budget surplus the federal government had in 2000?

The answer is, three main things. First,...President George W. Bush cut taxes in the service of his party’s ideology... — and the bulk of the cuts went to a small, affluent minority.

Similarly, Mr. Bush chose to invade Iraq because that was something he and his advisers wanted to do,... it took a highly deceptive sales campaign to get Americans to support the invasion...

Finally, the Great Recession was brought on by a runaway financial sector, empowered by reckless deregulation. And who was responsible for that deregulation? Powerful people in Washington with close ties to the financial industry...

So it was the bad judgment of the elite, not the greediness of the common man, that caused America’s deficit. And much the same is true of the European crisis. ...

Why should we be concerned about the effort to shift the blame for bad policies onto the general public?

One answer is simple accountability. People who advocated budget-busting policies during the Bush years shouldn’t be allowed to pass themselves off as deficit hawks; people who praised Ireland as a role model shouldn’t be giving lectures on responsible government.

But the larger answer, I’d argue, is that by making up stories about our current predicament that absolve the people who put us here there, we cut off any chance to learn from the crisis. We need to place the blame where it belongs, to chasten our policy elites. Otherwise, they’ll do even more damage in the years ahead.

This Is Shopped of the Day: The Yiddish-language Ultra-Orthodox daily Der Tzitung apparently felt that their policy of keeping photos of women out of their publication (for fear of sexually exciting Hasidic men) took precedence over the presence of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the iconic SitRoom photo because they shopped her right out of her seat.

Rabbi Jason Miller @ Jewish Week points out that, in doing so, Der Tzitung may have violated the Jewish legal principle of g’neivat da’at (deceit), but, irrespective of which tenets of faith may or may not have been harmed, the revisionism certainly violates the retouching restriction on the White House Flickr page which stipulates that photographs “may not be manipulated in any way.”

Yet one company alone should not have the power to manage identity for everyone. A workable and safe social backbone must support competition and choice, while still retaining the benefits of the network. Email interoperability was created not by the domination of one system, but by standards for communication.
To achieve a web-wide effect, Google+ needs more openness and interoperability, which it does not yet have. The features offered by the upcoming Google+ API will give us a strong indication of Google's attitude towards control and interoperability.

There is some substantial evidence that Google would support an open and interoperable social backbone:

Google's prominence as a supporter of the open web, which is crucial to its business.

The early inclination to interoperation of Google+: public content items have a URI, fallback to email is supported for contacts who are not Google+ members.

Google is loudly trumpeting their Data Liberation Front, committed to giving users full access to their own data.

Google has been involved in the creation of, or has supported, early stage technologies that address portions of the social backbone, including OAuth, OpenID, OpenSocial, PubSubHubbub.

Google displays an openness to federation with interoperating systems, evinced most keenly by Joseph Smarr, the engineer behind the Google+ Circles model. The ill-fated Google Wave incorporated federation.

The most open system possible would best benefit Google's mission in organizing the world's information, and their business in targeting relevant advertising.
