Oak Alley - Civil War Exhibit

The US Civil War had a major impact on the US, Louisiana, and on Oak Alley Plantation. So much of this historic event is not being taught in the classroom ...

Oak Alley on the River Road

Huge live oak trees believed to be over 300 years old form a canopy a quarter of a mile along the drive that leads up to Oak Alley Plantation a classic Greek Revival style antebellum plantation.

Louisiana Vignettes

I have a stack of paper scraps with hastily scrawled notes, meant to help identify photographs.  Some of these notes are 24 years old!  Being home with a cold is a good time to sift through these...

Inside the Pod : Michelle Ladner's Oak Alley Visit

We left Saturday morning with excitement roiling through our veins. Nothing could stop us! J and I had always dreamed of visiting Oak Alley (rumored to be haunted and film home of Louis from Interview with a Vampire). J was thrilled by the promise of a plantation estate filled with southern gothic flare and dark storytelling inspiration. Me? It was big, big trees and a chance to walk on the same ground as Brad Pitt’s stunt horse. Of course I was excited! Alas, this feverish anticipation was quickly subdued when we’d driven all of four minutes and I said, “Sh*t! I forgot my camera.”

Houston Girl in New York: Sara Macel

I was born and raised in the suburbs of Houston, Texas, surrounded by a community that believed in Jesus, high school football, and the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Within this community I was somewhat of an outsider, though I would put my level of rebellion on par with that of any typical teenager. The only real thing that set me apart from the others was my camera. And once I picked it up, there was really no turning back. My photography stems from my personal life, and therefore the South has always been a favorite subject of mine. In March 2006, I traveled to New Orleans to photograph the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina approximately six months after the storm. As a child of the Gulf Coast region, I felt a sense of duty to bear witness to the ongoing struggle to rebuild and to help in some way. Beyond seeking out photographs of the destruction, I was also able to capture images from the city's the Saint Patrick's Day parade and remnants from Louisiana's plantation era. Living and photographing in the South, I have witnessed the region's familiarity with defeat. From the Civil War to the constant threats of nature and the overwhelming heat, Southerners have an ingrained ability to bear hardship. This stubborn insistence on surviving was never more palpable to me than on this trip.

Ain't Afraid of No Ghost - Paranormal Investigators

Night had fallen in the central Louisiana town of Leesville, enveloping the property of Donnie and Judy Smythe in a dark, inky silence. It was the time of day the Smythes dreaded most.

San Diego Reader | Oak Alley Plantation, Louisiana

Oak Alley, however, is not called the Grande Dame of the Great River Road for nothing. Set back behind a quarter-mile avenue lined with magnificent 300-year-old grandmother oaks stands the classic Greek-Revival style antebellum mansion owned by none other than the man known as the Sugar King of Louisiana.

Peacocks at Oak Alley?

I have a nice set of Louisiana fog images that deserved their own post.  Growing up in Louisiana, I don't remember as much beauty as I have experienced as an adult visitor.

{Note: peacocks no longer roam the grounds, this was an older photo.}

Step into antebellum elegance where, in 1837, aristocrat Jacques Roman wooed French Quarter debutante Celina Pilé by building a Greek-revival mansion to entice her to leave her New Orleans life behind. Stroll along the levee to watch the Mississippi roll by on the way to your private, century-old cottage, where you can prearrange to have champagne, chocolate-covered strawberries or souvenir waffle robes waiting....
